“merely rubber”? Just wait 100 years.
After the oceans have turned to acid and all the whales have perished, after desertification has reduced the amount of arable land such that we are forced to subsist by eating potatoes and algae, the only perfumes and cosmetics we know will be derived from burnt pieces of rubber from ships destroyed in wars long ago.
“possibly from a ship which caught fire.”
Hopefully it was the Haunted Cannibalistic Rat Ship of Doom…?
