I mean, you don’t need to “assume”, it’s a verifiable thing that is backed up by as many sources as there are against James Deen. It colours in the same way that a piece by Roman Polanski on Bill Cosby would, or the way Orson Scott Card’s personality has coloured Ender’s Game - just because the words being expressed are good, or on the side of “correct” public opinion, doesn’t change that the person saying them is a mondo grosso.
Yeah, I do need to assume because you didn’t provide any cations. I’m not contradicting your claim, mind you, because I know eff all about the author. If the article condemns Deen as a sociopath, then how does your claim about the author being a dick color your reading of it?
He gives the cookie monster a terrible name…Christ what a dildo.
( He doesn’t even rank high enough to be an asshole).
In the same way that, as I opened, a broken/sexist clock can be right twice a day - just because it’s telling you the right thing now that doesn’t change that it is a broken/sexist clock.
So, not at all.
Got it. You were just noting your claims about the author to note them, not to comment in any way on the truth or falsity of the article on Deen. Not saying you shouldn’t, but I genuinely thought you might have been commenting on the credibility of the article with your assertions about the author.
Some, but not all. Claiming to be a feminist doesn’t protect you from being an asshole, but holding feminist beliefs doesn’t make a man an asshole. But hey, you take issue with much of their beliefs which means that, uh, I guess if you, e.g. don’t want women to vote you’re standing up for them?
LOL. Yeah, after passive-aggressive-ly invoking pedantry, I realized I wasn’t accounting for TIG/MIG/MAG/PAW/etc., and topics like proper stick-out and globular vs. spray transfer modes. But I convinced myself to ignore these methods since they require denying normal amounts of oxygen to the workpiece, and that would be too hard on Deen’s co-workers.

(Yup, that’s the allusive style of TFA; kinda understand why Very Old And Important American Magazine decided not to run with it ; -)
Hey, the same author wrote this:
http://the-toast.net/2014/06/05/german-rocket-cats-meditation/
I challenge you to say anything negative about the author after reading that.
Do you self-identify as a feminist? If not, why not?
Being a feminist should be the default setting for anyone who isn’t a total asshole, like being an abolitionist or an anti-segregationist. But you shouldn’t take every claim of being a feminist at face value, any more than you should take a statement that begins “I’m not a racist, but…” at face value.
Well, I could point to the time that he ran a harassment blog: http://ettinjiggywithit.tumblr.com/post/106855388993/that-time-zak-smith-ran-a-harassment-blog
Or how he’s connected to a history of abuse in other tabletop spaces: http://failforward.co.uk/post/93348768153/how-dungeons-and-dragons-is-endorsing-the-darkest
Or how he’s banned from several of the most prominent roleplaying game spaces on the internet due to his sexism, amongst other things: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?698051-Infraction-for-Zak-S-17)-Permanent-Ban
But hey, dude wrote on cat rockets one time! I guess he’s alright after all.
Probably not. I’ve never choked on a Jimmy Dean sausage…
I have to think that James Deen’s moderately baby-faced good looks and outwardly pleasant smile and demeanor trigger something in me that make it hard to presume him evil. Intellectually, I have no problem believing that a man who chokes women for a living just might be a villain in real life (not to mention the multiple accusations of rape), but my lizard brain really wants to think that pleasant looking means pleasant person. Kind of annoying that, since I know that former does not actually entail the latter.
Bull pucky.
I’m pro many forms of feminism, and for equal pay for equal work, pro-choice, pro title 9, pro-women in the military, and on and on, including many other feminist causes, but I don’t consider myself a feminist, nor a total asshole, and I resent your over the top implied blanket accusation. Your false dichotomy of “feminist or asshole” is the kind of divisiveness we don’t need in a rational conversation.
My definition of “feminist” is “someone who supports the dictionary definition of feminism.”
So yeah, I have no problem with the “feminist or asshole” dichotomy.
Nope. You don’t get to impose your labels on me. I reject your divisiveness.
I didn’t write the dictionary.
None of those claims are sourced to any links despite it all being online behavior that should be linkable. It’s just other people Zak has written about–other James Deens–complaining that they got written about.
That’s an insult to innocent dildos everywhere…
Your false dichotomy does not come from “the dictionary.” That’s on you.
As far as I’m aware Deen has never labeled himself a feminist, and has actually actively rejected the label when directly asked about. Others labeled him as a feminist based on the same sort of lazy media approach to this douche that the linked article is complaining about.
Do you support the dictionary definition of feminism cited above?
If so you meet the dictionary definition of “feminist.”
If not then you meet the dictionary definition of “sexist.”
THAT’S HOW WORDS WORK.
