Apologies if it appears to be a blanket statement. All I mean to say is that - in my subjective experience - overt claims of ‘feminism’ by men should be examined carefully, as among the many weirdnesses I’ve experienced, I’ve noticed that ‘male feminists’ seem to think that they’re owed some kind of special privilege for being big enough to say they think women ought to be equal to men.
It’s OK. It’s just that I have alarm bells go off in my head when I hear someone say that. It reminds me of the womens seperatist movement and the TERFs that were common within it.
I agree.
Yeah - just Samoas? Guy is clearly unhinged.
My lizard brain seems to think the opposite way… I am automatically distrustful of conventionally pleasant looking people.
What is your evidence that the stereotype is outdated? Have you been through every nook-and-cranny of porn valley? True, I’ve never spent time in there, my evidence is based on a handful of mainstream media interviews and news programs like Frontline and 48 Hours, as well as seeing porn itself. I think the very nature of the industry still attracts people with nothing left to lose, who don’t know what they’re getting into, but I’m not saying that’s all it is.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the porn industry is homogeneous: there are intelligent people making erotica, and there are creeps making a fast buck and indulging their basest instincts. Part of this James Deen story is that he forced an actress into doing an anal scene on camera, and the film crew high fived him for “getting an anal scene for the price of a boy/girl scene”-- how is the non-porn world supposed to react to that?
cookies.
The word you’re looking for is cookies.
The claims should at least not be taken at face value, but rather as a benchmark to judge the person’s actions (much as with socialist managers).
Feminism is simply the belief that women are equal to men.
Assholes are perfectly capable of believing that.
Hell, if you’re a straight psychopath, you definitely believe that - everyone is equal to everyone else and they’re all less than you.
FWIW after 5 minutes research
Feminism is simply the belief that women are equal to men.
Now, that’s a handy slogan to whip around, but are handy slogans really all that useful? Is “women are equal to men” not open to a wide variety of colorful and interesting interpretations?
Yeah, I guess that’s what I’m reaching for. I come across a lot of t-shirt-wearing feminist men who seem to primarily respond to very orthodox gender stereotypes, engage in overt white-knighting with embedded covert problematic ideas about women (vis. my skepticism of Joss Whedon, whose view of women seems to be greatly informed by Masoch), and expect automatic reward for things that ought to be normal in a way that I find seems to stem from a greatly restricted idea of female autonomy.
Is it? Or is it the belief that they aren’t, but should be?
I’d suggest that you’ve just described ‘lean-in “feminism”’ (scare-quotes mine, so you can guess my opinion of that).
There actually are females who like it. I personally longdistance-knew one, who for some reason was sharing her love life with me (well, at least she talked to me)…
Also,
Yeah, that in itself would definitely ring some alarm bells. (I mean, feminist men can wear t-shirts, but men wearing feminist t-shirts would be odd).
There’s a favorite meme that I have for such folks:
*lolz
Cookie Feminism is the belief that all girl scout cookies are unique and deserve equal respect.
No slight on sensitive hunk Tom Hiddleston… but the whole t-shirt campaign had an ironic backstory…
That’s right.
You don’t.
If it’s any consolation, I also do not consider you to be a feminist.
Nope. You don’t get to decline credit. I reject your divisiveness. And raise you obtuseness.
