Kaufman was hired to write an adaptation of The Orchid Thief , and seeing no way to write a dramatic narrative out of some meditative thoughts on flower poaching, he decided to write a screenplay about Charlie Kaufman struggling to write a screenplay about The Orchid Thief .

I loved how early on in the movie his character was talking about how he didn’t want to “Hollywood up” the adaptation by tacking on a bunch of the typical movie trappings like sex, drugs, guns and car chases… and then by the end of the third act he’s neck deep in all those things.
