I learned to swim in the Gulf (and natural springs). We played in the rip currents. Key point is “I learned to swim.”

As a diver, I have used rip currents to carry us from the beach to the dive site, to save us some of the efforts on the surface swim. Heading back, I just move to one side of the rip current and let the wave action carry us back.
Once the entry/exit was a narrow cove with a ripping current. For that, I dumped all the air out of my BC and “walked” back up the beach on the bottom, using the remaining air in the tank.
