There’s a lot of responses here, so I’m probably not saying anything that hasn’t already been said, but this op-ed is deeply weird; it seems that nobody on any side thinks this was a positive contribution to anything. Republicans feel like it’s just making things worse by airing dirty laundry and pissing off Trump; Democrats are frustrated that the unnamed official isn’t taking action to get rid of an admittedly incompetent leader rather than undermine him.
What it feels like to me is someone close to Trump (maybe Pence, probably just a senior aide) who’s spent the last year or so constantly fixing Trump’s mistakes, covering for him, curbing his impulses, etc and feels like he’s Saving America, being a hero, and can’t tell anyone. He’s frustrated because he thinks he deserves credit for protecting us from a moron and helping Make America Great. So he writes a self-glorifying hagiography and sends it to the NYT so he can at least say, “that’s me. I’m saving the world. How awesome am I… the secret superhero!” as everyone facepalms.
I would carve that percentage down even more as many people supported and voted for him while explicitly stating that his more insane tendencies were an act, and political theatrics, and that it would all change after the election when he became president. It didn’t even have to be an illusion that they themselves bought, it was enough that it was illusion for those other voters who needed a sideshow to vote for. Of course they were wrong, so even they should now agree that this isn’t the president they thought they were buying.
English noun; in written use since at least 14th C. Used to refer to the pole star, and often, metaphorically, to mean "guiding star, goal, aspirational principle, etc.
“Lode” is etymolgically related to “lead” (as in “lead/follow”, not “lead/copper”).
It’s what you can use to navigate if your lodestone isn’t working.
i think we are in a situation right now where there’s a serious question if elections will happen and if they’ll matter.
dear leader is not stable. it’d be great if he were gone. it’d be great if pence were shown the door straight after.
bad is bad, and you don’t allow it to happen hoping that it might in theory be less bad then what’s next.
instead you say, this is unacceptable. and you say it again and again and again.
the goal of fixing things is far beyond getting rid of this administration. it’s ending whatever monstrosity the republican party has morphed into. it’s getting america to recognize - finally - its racist and classist systems. it’s time for them all to go. every step down that path is a win.
