I have an idea. Let’s move to some remote location, like Grand Rapids, MI. We can open a health spa, serve people tasteless, bland food like rolled corn flakes and preach our anti-masturbation beliefs to all the patients.

In my college days I read far too many 19th-century popular media and “how to live right” books and was struck by the obsession with masturbation (or as they usually termed it, self-abuse). Endless chapters were devoted to horror stories of mental decline, physical deterioration, and criminality caused by masturbation. J Harvey Kellogg wrote extensively about the subject but he wasn’t alone.
Not all such writers were antisemites like Kellogg though they sometimes suggested that “others” with more animalistic natures were more inclined toward self-abuse. A common theme was the notion of self abuse as a communicable disease. One couldn’t discuss the topic without including a story of a single boy infecting an entire boarding school with the evil habit. Always boys and men. I don’t know whether they figured women didn’t masturbate or they simply didn’t bother giving them any thought. Probably the latter.

For people with porn problems, Sex Addicts Anonymous, based on AA 12 step programs, seems to offer the sanest and most useful support for dealing with the problem as far as I can tell.
