Aquaman will never be cool no matter how hard DC tries

I wonder if audiences are finally ready for a speedo-clad superhero with eyebrows by Divine.

John Waters should totally make that movie.

Disney already made a movie about a Divine lookalike involved in a power struggle to rule an undersea kingdom.

Whoever wrote the dialogue for this mess should be stripped, whipped and dragged behind the chemical sheds to recite the folllowing words until Donald Trump is dead:

“I’m Really Really Sorry I made the heroes sound like 16-year olds with an internet connecion while the villains sound like they learned BBC Received Pronunciation translated through a latin textbook.”

Also, the scriptwriter needs to move on from that time he was bullied in school.

It’s not just Hollywood, it’s global. How many martial arts movies are blue and orange? A lot.

I agree that grim and dark sums up the other DC films as a whole. BUT…those are complete films we have seen. This trailer is only 2 and a half minutes of an entire film and not all parts of the trailer are dark and grim. So. How about we wait to watch the film to jump to a conclusion.

I think this is going to end up being the half way point between WW’s tone and SZ’s tone. And I for one hate the feel of the Shazam movie. Not because of the light hearted child like feel. But because of the costume and casting of Levi. I think he is utterly wrong for this part.

I would have registered a new account to post that one.

I take it you prefer the traditional 1940s-inspired version with matching sash? (So many superheroes don’t know how to accessorize anymore).

I’m really not a big fan of Aquaman outside of the Brave and the Bold cartoons and Grant Morrison’s JLA comics. The current DC mandate of selling Aquaman comics as “He’s cool! Dammit, he’s really cool! Really, really cool!” just comes across as silly.

But for cryin’ out loud, I can’t figure out any way that trailer qualifies as grimdark. It has humor, inspirational music, big action, sunlit scenes, and a downright bright logo at the end. It’s almost as upbeat as the “Shazam” trailer. If you think this is grimdark, you should have your head examined.

On the other hand, we shouldn’t forget that the last time there was a really fun, humorous DC movie trailer… it was for “Suicide Squad.”

I feel like brave and the bold and the earlier Justice League cartoon got the thing about aquaman that’s incredibly important.

He doesn’t work at all if the writers or the character take it too seriously. You can have all the stern heroic Aquaman you want. Provided he can also be unrepentant goofy sometimes. JLU let him be grumpy and he had the hook hand and mullet. But there were Aquaman jokes a plenty. And when the character was self serious it was often ironically at odds with those around him. Brave and the bold had him voiced by John DiMaggio ( https://youtu.be/VDRPgLBVnkQ ) And gave him a musical number.

Guyliner and tats. It just reminds too hard of various periods where DC desperately failed to make Aquaman Badass cool. Harpoon hands, mullets, undersea armor. ANGER and grimdark were their chief tools. Suddenly he was a wizard king of the most violent undersea kingdom ever and every where you looked: bewbz. They seem to think Aquaman will suddenly not be Aquaman if they make him look enough like a 20 year old metal album.

I loved Aquaman when I was a kid in the Sixties and early Seventies, and I also loved the Jacques Cousteau specials on TV back then, and the other shows, movies and comics that dealt with undersea exploration and adventure.

The kid’s animated version of Aquaman was fun, including Tusky.

I really like Jason Momoa, and look forward to seeing what they do with this film.

I feel like it’s fair to judge the tone of a film by the trailer given that the point of a trailer is to advertise the film, and there’s little percentage in advertising a film as being not the kind of film it is. Trailers take all sorts of liberties with what actually happens in the film, plot, quality, etc, but it’s my overall impression they try to hit the feel of the film. Or at least the feel the film is going for.

That being said, my impression of the trailer is actually that DC appears to be making an effort to move away from grimdark a little bit for this film. It has a couple jokes, it includes some shots with actual color in them… honestly I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic?

Still kinda hate the art direction. … Of the entire DCU, frankly. I mean I liked Wonder Woman okay, but I still feel like all the colors were… muted. Is that just me? (For the record, I apply the same criticism to The Amazing Spider-Man)

Which is kinda ironic, seeing as the director is best known for directing horror movies.

If you’re getting paid to write reviews about a property, due diligence suggest you should know something about that property. Basic background reading is really not that hard.

Aquaman is probably my favorite DC hero behind Batman and Wonder Woman. I love the mythos and I think he is more interesting than people give him credit for. I hated what they did to him for JL (and the film itself). Jason Momoa was fine. But trying to make him an edgy surfer bro was a mistake. Just give me my regal King of Atlantis. Thanks. But that’s my problem with Zach Synder in DC films as a whole. It doesn’t need to be edgy or artsy hipster cinematography (I really loathe Snyder). Patty Jenkins did a much better job, it was aesthetically pleasing and light but serious. It felt more like a Marvel movie (they are problematic but far superior) and it was really well made.

Like I don’t think Marvel embraced edgy. They added realism and added some drama (but comic books are already DRAMA) and they have done well. I look at the DCVerse on TV as their golden ticket. They are doing well there and the shows are great. I think they should play to that. But they don’t pay me so…
