Aquaman will never be cool no matter how hard DC tries

20 yrs too late???
The version that they’re using for Aquaman in these movies was created way back in the early 90s! And he was Every Bit of the Same Character Jason is bringing to life on the screen. Go look up Peter David work on Aquaman around 1994. Thoes stories will tell you just how he let the Entire DC Universe Know… That The King Of Atlantis Will Whup Yo Azz!!!

They really missed out by not casting Shannon Purser (Barb from Stranger Things) as Squirrel Girl.

Oh, we want an Aquaman trailer where he is wearing Crocs while looking up his enemies on Facebook using a new Apple laptop. That would fuse their little minds to slag.

I am not sure why I want to fuse their little minds to slag, but I think it ought to be done.

There’s always an audience for sword-n-sorcery. I think those folks will come out for Swordfish and Sorcery.

Marine Boy … is he related to the Free Willy boy?

I’ve spent my fair share of time reading comics, talking comics, and hanging out with people who do the same. Not once has anyone told me their favorite superhero is Aquaman nor have I ever been asked “Dude! Have you read the new Aquaman?”
Who is this movie for anyway?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but that’s actually covered quite nicely in Justice League (the movie… which I actually liked a lot, apart from the obligatory CGI battle ending of course, but then 99% of genre movies end that way)

All this info is correct, sir. Thanks for posting it. Every time the character gets brought up with MCU honcho Kevin Feige, he always speaks of Namor’s very murky rights issues preventing them from using him. Like you, I’m surprised that due to lack of usage, the film rights with Universal et al., haven’t reverted.

And thanks for correcting my spelling of Sub-Mariner! D’oh.

I think they have. Joe quesada and several MCU mucky mucks keep insisting they have. While Fiege just keeps saying maybe and we don’t know. And they haven’t. Keeping it vague. More recently it gets compared to Star Wars. Where Fox owns distribution to ANH forever. I get the sense that the rights are so muddled they can’t be sure without an expensive project to untie it all.

Like I vaguely recall back when Universal had announced a flick both Fox and Sony supposedly preparing to take a run at Universal for fat dollars. Fox because of the previously mentioned f4 and X-men connections. Sony because a case could plausibly be made for Namor being a Spidey villain, in part due to Spidermans time on the Fantastic 4. And Fox trying to get Namor for F4 because as a villian he’s part of Fantastic Four. But as a hero he was with Universal. Or so the argument went. All rumors of course. But apparently the rights were messy enough to allow that sort of thing.

So I can imagine they’re still a mess till the buyout is done and Marvel makes some sort of deal with Universal.

Shockingly, there’s other comics fans than the ones you know, and a lot of them really enjoy the modern take on Aquaman, especially the way he’s been portrayed by Jason Momoa in the DC films. For a lot of people, he and Wonder Woman have been the highlights of those movies, and I’ve been hearing/seeing a lot of excitement about the Aquaman movie from all over The Internet. I imagine that’s who it’s for.

I’m not sure that making a big budget film for a subset of a subset of a subset is a good move. Been doing to comics things for over 40 years now and while I’m sure you’ll find the fish man fans on the comic forums, I don’t see them in the comic book store. That’s all I’m saying.

Reminds me of the old “Why does that pig have a wooden leg?” joke.

He’s awesome. But he is also a comic relief dorky blowhard as well. Someone who tries to bore his enemies to death with his “big fish” stories.

He’s no Namor. Lover of all things under the sea (literally in all senses of those words)

The credits show the director is Ricou Browning. Mr. Browning’s main claim to fame was being the Gill Man in the Creature from the Black Lagoon movies. The guy knew how to handle filming underwater!

I’m sorry, you clearly have NOT read Aquaman books. He is as powerful in DC as WW and Supes, but has the weight of governing 85% of the planet on his shoulders. DC has done one animated film completely about him and another with him ready to conquer the entire planet.

I will say to you the same thing I said to Seamus…referring to Aquaman solely on this “fish man” as if that is the only defining quality of the character is pretty damn offensive. It’s like saying Wonder Woman is just “the hero with boobs” or Superman is “that guy with the tights” or Batman is just “the guy dressed like a bat”. bullshit. Aquaman is just as nuanced as the other DC head liners, just because YOU don’t see it or know that, it doesn’t make it untrue.

And if the benchmark for making a movie is only “Well we need mass appeal to make this” we would never have gotten anything other than 25 Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and Wolverine movies. Last time I checked one of the biggest complaints about Black Panther and an all black-cast blockbuster was “Oh, it will never sell, it won’t be worth it” and it became one of the top grossing flicks domestically all time. Same was said for WW as the “a female lead hero film will not do well”…but every seemed to love it no?

So sorry…but no. Folks on BBS do not get to play both sides of this. Aquaman not being interesting to YOU…no issues whatsoever. But anyone giving some blanket “Oh no one wants to see this” fuck that noise.

I WANT TO SEE IT. Both my sons WANT TO SEE IT. My 10 year old is stoked for Captain Marvel even if I do not like the look and feel…HE DOES.

Maybe Aquaman will not do any better at the box office than Suicide Squad or Solo…maybe it will be as entertaining and successful as Wonder Woman or The Dark Knight…we don’t know yet. All we have seen is 2 min of a trailer. And everyone is ready to throw it in the trash.

No buddy, it’s not. We are talking about imaginary people here so being offended by someone not liking your imaginary friend is all about your personal problems and nothing to do with anyone else.

I’ve read enough. It’s a silly premise and DC knows it. That’s why they built up his importance so much. Rebooting fish boy in to a grittier and more important figure doesn’t change how lame the idea is.

yeah, we do. It’s a comic. We can have any opinions or thoughts about this that we like. Treating those voices as personal attacks, that actually might be something you don’t get to play.

Well, “the rich guy dressed like a bat” is pretty much a complete description of the Batman. (Since I grew up in the 60s, for me he’s “the rich guy dressed like a bat in tights”.)
