Aquaman will never be cool no matter how hard DC tries

I think we all know it’s Beaton, though.

Indeed… truth!

I like it but I think Edna would disagree with part of the uniform…

Just so you know: Aquaman is cool, boing boing writers are not cool.
You’re welcome.

Stop shitting on things you HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN. It’s disingenuous, it’s attention seeking BS, and you are not smart for doing so, no matter how you feel.

It is NOT journalism.

Oh,finally some to dictate what can and cannot offend people. You’re quite the internet hero, buddy.

Explain to me how king of Atlantis, and underwater city is silly? You calling that silly? then you should just stop having anything to do with comics, cause clearly they aren’t for you. I can word any comic and make it ‘silly’.

Edna was wrong. The whole movie is brought you you by the anti cape agenda.

or is drunk while eating it, aka Hoffing it…

Because you run Aquaman reader demographics and number? on, wait that’s not it. Oh right, you aren’t a fan and as such just like to project how you feel onto others in order to make yourself feel like you matter and are ‘smart’.

Iron Man wasn’t a great seller at the time, and was, at best, a B level character until the movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy would also qualify, as would Dr. Strange.

We don’t see much of anyone in the comic store, broadly speaking.

The underwater city looked awesome, so I’m not sure why that matters.

I did that with the DC brand a long time ago. It was too silly.

When someone making fun of an imaginary thing offends you, that’s on you. You can be upset. You can be angry. You can’t pretend it’s anything other than your own problem because imaginary things aren’t real.

Nope, but he had a cool story and was a tragic figure of an alcoholic so at least he was interesting to me. But yeah, you can not like him if you want. You can make fun of him even. That’s not going to upset me because he’s imaginary. I might disagree but for me to say it is offensive for you to make fun of Iron Man would be ludicrously self absorbed.

And they both have truly terrific eyebrows. Coincidence?

Dismissing aquaman as a goofy Fishman. Is in no way the same as dismissing Wonder Woman for mysoginistic reasons or attacking Black Panther for racist ones.

This may surprise you buy fishmen are not an oppressed minority. And no-one is mocking Aquaman because of a deep bias against fishmen. Because there are no fish man. Things you like aren’t the same category of thing as ethnic groups and genders.

No-one is pissed when Wonder Woman gets discussed that way because some one doesn’t like their favorite character. They get pissed because some one doesn’t like women.

Like it or not Aquaman is pretty goofy. All super heroes are. But especially Aquaman. His back story is that a lighthouse keeper fucked a mermaid. Dc can’t escape it either and they’ve had problems selling books featuring the guy since the 70s and 80s. So they’ve repeatedly retconned, piled “mythos” on top of the fucked a fish story, And gone back and forth over the 90s knife fist anger beard version of the character.

And while that era in comics has its fans. People who really think Rob Liefield is great. And demand 6 foil variant covers of every issue. That’s a small group. And those approaches to characters and practices are commonly fingered as a big part of what nearly killed the comics industry at the time. My time as a dedicated DC guy in the 00’s, new comic day every Wednesday, reading nearly everything. That version of Aquaman was more often made fun of than the more classic approach. DC has repeatedly attempted to sell the character by lining him up with whatever is teen boy cool this week. And it’s often only served to make him significantly goofier, just in a different way.

The whole “who is it for” question is a good one. I like Aquaman, Aquaman can be super fun. I like Jason Momoa. I love comic and genre films. I don’t give a shit about this. And it’s a question you could apply to the entire DC slate of films. They haven’t worked, they have not made money. They’re pretty poorly made movies. Even the “good” ones just aren’t particularly well bolted together. Aquaman is a push, DC knows it. Since before any of these things came out there’s been a lot of “why” about an Aquaman movie, And it was one of the first announced. Given their track record. And what were seeing in the trailer. It’s tattooed Jason Momoa, but Atlantis is still crab armor and magic psuedo fantasy Atlantis. It’s fine to wonder if DC and WB really have any clue what they’re doing with this. Especially since DC doesn’t seem to have a clear idea of what to do with Aquaman since the 60’s.

I think any movie is “for” people who enjoy it. Many many movies are silly when you put them down on paper. An interstellar crimefighting tree and his raccoon buddy? A spacefaring fuzzy gorilla as the co-pilot of a ship shaped like a hamburger? Four dweebs with homemade laser backpacks that fight hotdog-loving ghosts? Compared to those, the King of Atlantis battling for control of the oceans sounds pretty epic.

I agree, it was just as over the top as every other trailer out there.

So now we are choosing to limit people’s interpretation of marginalization. Awesome.

I stated fairly clearly above that my issue is not with “someone doesn’t find Aquaman interesting”. Different comics resonate and intrigue different people.

My issue was and is the expressed opinion of “I think Aquaman is stupid there fore the movie, comic and DC are stupid for it…no one wants to see this idiot who talks to fish”.

My example of Wonder Woman AND superman AND Batman is that if someone boils any character down to a single dimension of their back story then it is a mischaracterization and unacceptable. Wonder woman is NOT just a super hero with breasts…exemplified with most story lines about Powergirl wherein her most notable assets are specifically referenced as not being the only thing about her worth noticing. Same can be said for many other characters. Multiple times it is referenced in Wolverine story lines that he is more than just a berserk-er killing machine. Likewise Aquaman is more than just a guy who talks to fish…again expressly called out by the writers of various story lines.

“The film sucks, Aquaman sucks!” based on a 2 min 36 sec trailer.

You think that’s ok and a good way to conduct honest criticism? by all means, have it, enjoy yourselves. That’s the same mentality of Trump and his ilk. Jump right into that same play pen along with commentators on Fox News and Brietbart.

Have a nice day…leave me out of it.

Salty probably would’ve been a more age-appropriate choice than my fave film from that year:

The idea of communicating with the dolphins really appealed to me.
