Tech writer.
Almost 30 years (?) existence of common use internet.
Almost 30 years of news stories about pedophiles being busted online.

You would think he would recognize a come on that was too good to be true.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. The ratio of law enforcement to actual under age people on these forums must be at least 10 or 100 to 1. You’d think a tech writer would know that.

Well, from what gets posted to Pornhub, I imagine many underage girls are pretty savvy about skirting around the law in chatrooms and the like, but this specific type of come on? Holy crap.

i actually sincerely believe that certain… elements… fanned the flames of pizzagate so that when real conspiracies come to light, people will roll their eyes and laugh.

kind of like how the russians fanned 9/11 conspiracy theories so that anyone who talks about who putin came to power through a series of FSB orchestrated apartment bombings sounds insane

It reads like the “too good to be true” trolls on tinder, who are just trying to get your email address for spammers. Once you see the same approach used two or three times it is obvious who is actually behind each fake profile.

Either way, yuck.

That’s weird. The people who write for Ars Technica are bright people. Makes you wonder what the hell he was thinking.

Once you realize he wasn’t thinking with his brain, it all becomes clear.

Even if we treat human willingness to do dumb things under the influence of lust as a given(which seems fair enough); it still seems pretty dumb.

The old saying that the internet is “where the men are men, the women are men; and the children are FBI agents” was never literally true(and has gotten further from being true over time); but the risk of it being a fed sting(and one that leaves them with a very solid collection of neatly logged and timestamped evidence in addition to the surprise bust at the end) is certainly well known.

It’s not a problem I’m really inclined to think through solving in any detail; but given the ongoing reports of the difficulty in getting sexual crimes reported and successfully prosecuted; and the regions with serious human trafficking and coerced labor problems; I’m inclined to suspect that the internet is a relatively risky place to go looking for child rape options.

Compared to going up against the (sometimes appallingly apathetic) local authorities by just doing the crime in person; or taking advantage of an offshore jurisdiction with a tepidly effective criminal justice system and a cost of living index that makes greasing palms comparatively affordable; walking into a handy interstate nexus(which pretty much anything on the internet has) and running the risk that you are essentially confessing to a fed seems like a really bad idea(especially when, once the technical work is done to provide suitably anonymized personas on the relevant platforms has been done, running online stings is probably a very high throughput operation compared to doing just about any sort of physical investigation).

Hubris? Nerd acclimatization to obtaining things online?

This reminds me of something me ex father in law said once. He was member of a christian hippy commune, the leader(s) of which were found to be pedophiles (big fucking surprise, right?). When he was asked how things like that could be happening right under everyone’s noses, he said something to the effect of “bad people don’t start out bad, but make a long series of what seem like innocuous choices until one day… pedophile!” Of course, I’m paraphrasing, but I think there’s a lot of truth in that. Maybe even to the degree that many of them don’t even let themselves realize when they’ve stepped over the line. And then, once the line is stepped over, well, we’re already fucked, so why not?
