As Twitter traffic plummets and Threads soars, someone wants to compare body parts

More confirmation that Elon Musk is without question the best thing that has ever happened to Twitter.   Burn it down, Elon, burn it all down!

I’m sure historians will thank him for not leaving any records beyond ashes. After all it’s not like anything important happened there. :frowning:

That was awesome.

It’s not really. It has a reputation that far exceeds its actual reach.

There’s a pretty big space between say “Twitter was a major driver of social change” and “nothing of interest was ever written there”. You can look at how many dead links it will leave just on this bbs, not all for trivial things.

i get the urge to archive everything but the reality is that Facebook is far more important and would be of far more value to future historians than Twitter. The narrative around it that it is the social media site of record is utterly risible.

I don’t believe the “social media of record” nonsense at all. I do believe it was a place where politicians declared things, scientists shared and discussed their discoveries, artists showed off what they had done, and so on. I don’t love Twitter but the idea that it’s all just nothing of value to be lost is really devaluing a lot of people.

All those people you picked are people archived elsewhere. That’s my point. If it was something important on Twitter the record will be elsewhere. As you say it was hugely important for scientists for their altmetric scores and real world engagement. But it is published and measured elsewhere.

Facebook is the hidden history of the last couple of decades, Twitter is the already public history.

Internet researchers just loved it though for its API.

It’s going to be ok. I googled it (Duck Duck Go’d, or DDGd, actually, so I don’t pollute my google history) specifically so I wouldn’t have to open that long-soiled nappy of a publication.

I read it once, years ago, in an misguided fit of “read the arguments from both sides”. Terrible waste of time, that publication.

… how shitty a person does somebody have to be to have hundreds of billions of dollars and be unable to improve himself even slightly?

Like, what is all that money even for

It’s hard to imagine a bigger fan of Musk than himself.
