Huh. So they were arrested for interfering in an election?

From the article: “Each are charged with offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks and electronic devices; unlawful use of a two-way communications device; criminal use of personally identifiable information and conspiracy to commit those offenses.”

Oh, okay!

And she would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for Detective My Pillow Guy.

Thanks for that summary of charges. As terrible as it is to do something like this, is it a little terrifying to anybody else that this is a crime? With police?

Maybe I’m just too far removed from HS to care, or posturing as too cool to care about homecoming, but it is BOGGLING to me that anybody gives enough of a shit about this to call the police.

Her Mom is Hugo Chavez?

She was accessing student records improperly, which seems to be the core of the issue. Submitting votes from students who weren’t present, or hadn’t voted, something like that.

I went to a pretty small HS, so homecoming really wasn’t a big deal. Also, I guess being an art/science kid, and not a sportskid/letterman, it was especially not a big deal for my immediate crowd. But… is homecoming really that big of a deal in other schools? I mean, I see how for some places competitive cheerleading is actually a seriously considered extracurricular (which could help on college apps etc…), but homecoming queen? Would you actually claim that anywhere? Or is it just a “being a big fish in a small pond” sort of thing?

Arrested!? Seriously who gives enough fucks to arrest someone over this? What a waste of law enforcement resources.

Abuse of power by illegally accessing and using student’s personal information? Hell, yeah, that’s a crime.

I hope Reese Witherspoon plays her in the dark comedy movie adaptation.

Bring it full circle. That was Matthew Broderick’s “I’m not a cute teen anymore, I play grownups now” moment. Here’s a perfect opportunity to bury Tracy Flick!

Yeah, but they arrested the daughter too? That seems like a reach

Here’s the relevant bits from the article:

"Multiple Tate students told investigators the daughter described using her mother’s system access, or of watching her mother access records, for years, the report said. Investigators learned that since August 2019, Carroll’s account accessed 372 high school records and 339 of those were Tate students.

System users are required to change their password every 45 days, and Carroll’s annual training for the “Staff Responsible Use of Guidelines for Technology” was up to date, the agency said."

They’re both charged with unlawful uses of computer system. Homecoming is how they got caught.
