I wouldn’t sell him short on atrocities. He had to know that he’d be blamed for setting the mob on Congress. So long as it doesn’t result in criminal charges, who cares? Another impeachment, so what? So long as his fingerprints aren’t on any organized groups, there won’t be much more blowback.
What if he was hoping that the mob was more successful? Suppose they killed enough Democratic and RINO members of Congress that the Republicans controlled the House and Senate, before the final confirmation that Biden had won? As well, declaring some state of emergency wouldn’t be out of the question.
Yes, it would be illegal for Congress to declare him the victor, but who would prosecute them? And even if they didn’t, who would challenge him on the 20th, the late Nancy Pelosi or the late Mike Pence?
If his plan was only for the MAGA mob to protest outside the Capitol, why were federal agencies slow to respond and the National Guard blocked? (More investigation needs to be done on why that happened, but I’ll put the general blame on Trump for now.)

By all accounts he was elated by the response until it started looking like people might hold him accountable for it. I think he remains absolutely indifferent about the consequences his insurrection had for other people, including those who were killed. He’s only upset because the negative consequences hurt his approval rating.

i really think there should be more options. i mean “russian backed misinformation campaign” should surely be in there somewhere.
i mean, yeah. that definitely my read as well. he has enough people in his inner circle talking about how much he won by, and how he should declare martial law. he’s tried to strong arm people from at least two states into breaking the law and calling their state for him.
he probably couches things with lots of passive phrasing, but there’s no doubt in my mind he’s at the center of things.

It’s possible that Giuliani (apparently brokering the briberies) expects a cut of what is brought in; he wouldn’t broker for nothing. And I can’t see G doing this without Trump’s go-ahead, in which case Giuliani may be stiffed yet again.
