Austin cops violently crack down on scourge of anonymous jaywalking

Pfff. How 14 hours ago.

I’ve found certain areas really do have the problem of pedestrians going in the middle of the road at unpredictable times. I also read she was wearing headphones in this case. If you ask me, if you’re running through roads when you should not be whilst rendering oneself deaf in an area not designated with appropriate warnings about deaf people, you deserve a stern talking to. I admit the cops did an absolutely terrible job of cooling the situation down… I think Douglas Adams have the best advice on this one, which is the adage, “DON’T PANIC”.

I wear ear protectors. I sometimes cross at safer, quieter places than the crosswalks. I have severe hyperacusis and the pain from the traffic can be disabling, especially the pain from brakes, backup beeps, and whatever was at that one construction site. I worry that, crossing at noisy intersections, I will be in too much pain to keep walking and get out of the damn intersection. I have been in too much pain to keep walking and get away from a construction site somewhere on the other side of the street.

You have to carry a Green Card at all times.

If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid green card in your possession at all times.

99% invisible has a really good podcast about the transition from crowded pedestrian streets with strong anti-car sentiment to the total car dominated anti-pedestrian streets we have now. jaywalking was invented by the auto industry and it’s name refers to a “jay” (a slur for someone from the country) would be overwhelmed by the big city lights and wander into traffic.

it’s unfortunate that it always takes someone privileged getting fucked over to even be able to bring up ideas about privilege and oppression and have people listen to you for half a second. i don’t think that we can assume that she has had a hunky dory life with a silver spoon just because she has white skin, though.

This is an outrage. I mean, she’s not even brown!

I’m 95% certain I read this in Little Brother. Life imitating art?

That only applies if you are a permanent resident, not a citizen.

Well, duh.

if the internet existed prior to 1964, this the is exactly the kind of sniveling ‘advice’ that would have been doled out by cowards of all colors before the civil rights act went into proper effect

Maybe someone has made a similar comment.

Jaywalking laws seem to get enforced when something is out of kilter on the street (people getting hit by cars, robberies).

They also get oddly enforced when some head muckety muck wants to make their own Putin_like point.

There’s a well produced video by NAACP I think, where a big city public defender goes over what constitutional rights one has if there caught up in operation like this. When you get to the point of asking the officer if your being detained. This crap may stop.

As for IDs. I can understand why it’s a hassle when you’re going out for a run. Messes up my motivation looking for fricacta crap when I want to commit to take charge of my health.

The Doctrow novel?
Since that came out in '08, then it’s the other way 'round.
That happened to me in the late 90’s, and forever will sour the concept of Austin being some kind of creative arts Mecca.

Only if you want to vote.

Dammit I have that recorded and was just waiting for my coffee to be ready before watching it. Hiss boo for the unexpected Olympic spoiler in a thread about Austin cop thugs.

You know this site isn’t national news right? It’s a blog with stuff from people who decide to share it for whatever reason.

Though half the news sites and channels seem to trawl through BB and other sites for their ‘isn’t this weird’ filler stuff, and probably some of the other stuff as well.

Boingboing has long ago grown beyond being an underground site focusing on subcultures.

The majority of the 150+ traffic fatalities yearly in NYC are people crossing in a crosswalk with the right of way.

I understand Britain has no pedestrian laws and they have fewer pedestrian related accidents.

Indeed. I am free to step out in front of a bus whenever I want. It is a liberty I willingly choose not to exercise, mind.
