Also, I heard Sweet Child of mine earlier today, and it was stuck in my head, so I listened to this version and I felt better:
And this:
There are so many Coldcut tracks I’d like to post, but I’ll settle for some classic phone beeps. I worked for a telephone “research” company in the summer of 1992, and I’m seriously jonesing for the old tones and messages, weird crossed-lines and analog thunks as I moved from one system to another…
I’ll see you “Sweet Child o Mine” and raise you one “Royals”:
Here are a few more 1980s songs that really shouldn’t be forgotten.
And this is “!!!” (“chk chk chk”) doing “Hearts of Hearts” which sounds like a fantastic updated version of “I Love a Man in Uniform”
Puddles toured with the Eels.
Saw them at the Savannah Stopover a couple of years ago -unplanned -we wanted to see War on Drugs but they were late, screwing around and then just plain crap when they started, so we wandered off and caught this random all-girl Japanese band. Who were awesome.
Side note – Weird Al references “Every Day is Halloween” in his Lada Gaga “homage”.
MJ Hibbett’s - Alan Moore:
And Sophie Madeline - Don’t think Twice, it’s Alright (Dylan cover):
And her cover of Stronoway’s Zorbing:
I was reminded of this after finally seeing 24 Hour Party People last month (NB: wife and I are watching Alpha Papa and I WANT TO HAVE STEVE COOGAN’S BABY)
If you want to go that way…
My ringtone, has been for ages:
Also, because Jarvis.
Oh, if after watching 24 Hour Party people you like Michael Winterbottom’s work and want to check out his other stuff, definitely try A Cock and Bull Story or The Trip (more Steve Coogan!). Definitely do not watch 9 Songs unless you like desperately uncomfortable amateur porn masquerading as art house cinema.
A Cock and Bull Story was my introduction to Coogan, also enjoyed The Trip (have only seen the film-length compilation, sadly). Had not paid attention to their connections until recently, when we watched 24HPP. Which also makes me want to check out Andy Serkis in Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll.
Niiiiice. The Nuge’s giant ego has always kept me at a distance though. That Mountain track is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for out of this thread. I didn’t know it by name before, but I had heard it, for sure. So many songs like that out there!
Weird coincidence, I saw Alpha Papa (AMAZING) the day after- I posted the first song in the thread, since the Climax Blues Band song is in that film.
In that case, you need to see (if you haven’t already) : Alan Partridge, The Day Today, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Coogan’s Run and Saxondale.
And his segment of Coffee and Cigarettes with Alfred Molina…
The definitive Stagger/Stack o’ Lee, IMO:
Bleak.
That’s a bit special.
I’m a fan of the Nick Cave version (love those piano stabs and the bassline has so much swagger it’s almost as offensive as the lyrics) but that guy’s voice…
Seriously, cold chills down the back.
I can’t believe I haven’t yet posted this band/song! Amazing lyrics - but NSFW at many jobs!
Human Sexual Response with “What Does Sex Mean to Me?”
Here they are covering “Cool Jerk” - because seeing is believing.
No do this to “Let it Go” and I will be your best friend.
