Now that’s just mean. What has Michael Sweet ever done to you?
Nope, not a New Romantics among them…those are aaaalllll metal bands except for the four hefty, shirtless, guys with the bangs in their faces- they are definitely Misfits wannabees, but the Misfits are punk. Well, and the guys with the gold & silver lame, red & purple PVC, green glitter guitar, and Halloween wigs are are a 70s tribute band, so their outfits are intentionally over the tops because they are costumes.
The guys in black and white face paint + spikes galore are Black Metal bands and/or fans. The rest are a pretty standard selection of 70s & 80s Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Butt Rock, and Hair Metal/“Glam” bands of the 70s & 80s, including some pretty well known ones!
The Asian guys are a hugely successful Japanese metal band with as long history, X Japan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Japan
And the second band from the top is Judas Priest, voted by M-TV as the 2nd greatest metal band in history. The singer, Rob Halford pretty much jump started the whole “macho” leather, studs, & spikes S&M biker look for metal bands, what most didn’t know at the time was that Rob is gay and he took that look from underground leather man clubs of the time, lol.
I don’t actually care for metal, but I was a teen in the 80s so I picked up a lot of this stuff by osmosis.
YES! I’ve seen this guy’s site before, but it’s been awhile. thanks for the link!
Not really a awkward metal band photo, but the inspiration for Spinal Tap’s stonehenge debacle.
The guys below “Tunnel of Love” definitely wish they were Adam and the Ants.
I do so love that whole story, particularly the “It’s Ronnie Dio!” bit.
What Gillan neglects to mention is that he always forgets Deep Purple lyrics too.
I think you can see the cuecards here:

That’s X Japan, the Japanese visual kei metal band I referenced above. From the wiki article: “Predominantly a power/speed metal band with heavy symphonic elements, they later gravitated towards a progressive sound with an emphasis on ballads.” Hugely popular & successful in their native country, and def not Ants clones. Visual kei is kind of an odd thing as it describes a band’s look (super elaborate and over the top, makeup, big hair etc) more than it’s musical genre (anything from pop to goth to metal & more.)
Now Adam, with or without his Ants, I have been a huge fan of for years.
But even better than this blog post on that site is this one:
You could start a whole thread of visual kei “awkward photos”… actually, no you couldn’t, because they are AWESOME.
