I remember reading about John Lily’s experiments with dolphins in the 70s, which were simultaneously far ahead of their time and kind of ridiculous. When you intensely study dolphins with the premise that they’re far more intelligent than we suspect, but instead of, say, studying their innate communication abilities or dolphin societies, you spend most of your time dosing them with LSD and teaching them to mimic human sounds with their blowholes, it’s quite a lost opportunity, it seems.
