My experience is that a lot of doctors are surprisingly dumb on topics outside their field. They can also be fairly ignorant about topics which do fall within their field, such as recreational drug use. I don’t see it as a contradiction, especially in such a highly specialized field such as medicine. You simply don’t have time for a well-rounded education - it has to be all medicine, all the time.
Of course, in Carson’s case, he also attended a religious school, which is not a place you could get a proper science education in the first place.
