Bigot Fired

If you are not talking about contractual obligations, then you are not on topic. He is a public figure under contract with a network. You must be either really stupid or really young to not understand that. There is nothing obtuse about my assertion, it is actually much more on point than your little self-agrandizing opinion. A contract is a contract.

Thankfully, A&E has no legal obligation to entertain bigots.

So in effect, you are arguing that a TV network should be forced to continue airing a show even if the subject becomes a focus of public outrage and the network executives find him morally repugnant?

Oh is that what I said? Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Perhaps you misread me. I think that once an entity hires someone, the only legitimate reason for firing them should be due to what they do while working, not outside work.

Of course, if you’d like to be fully owned 24/7 by a corporation, go for it. That’s your preference. I can only imagine, however, that I wouldn’t like it. I hope it works out well for you, but I suspect it won’t.

But not all things evil, which is the quote.

funny how so many people here are arguing the same point that I am yet you find all of us terribly unclear and obtuse. Now you’re just trolling…

Oh, I’m sorry. I misread the title of the post as “bigot fired.”

yep, and “fired” means he was let go because he did something stupid that he did while under contract with his network employer. I’m SO glad you finally get it now. Carry on

Except when said behavior outside of work violates the terms of your contract. Keep going, you’re almost there!

If he never heard anyone singing the blues, he must not have been listening very hard. The blues pretty much arose from black culture in exactly the circumstances that he describes.

He was being interviewed to promote the show. So wouldn’t that mean that he was working?

If you watch it, you’ll see that Harrison Ford seemed to be boycotting the film as well, if we’re to judge by his performance in the film.

I knew she was going to chime in with a comment like “His right to free speech is being denied!!!” The article makes a good point about how she was not at all upset when Bashir was fired (after he said that someone should shit in her mouth).

Yeah, the Glaad argument is fairly silly: “He’s being an asshole and true christians can’t be assholes; his “claim” to being a christian is false.”

It’s another variation of the No True Scotsman argument.

Who is this “we” of which you speak…

But the job of Reality T.V. Star does add considerable fuzziness to that boundary. When you’re compensated for being yourself, even when that’s Yourself™, this can’t necessarily apply the same way it does for other occupations.

Most states are at-will with regard to employment: as long as someone isn’t fired for being one of a protected class (fired for being black, for example), they can be fired at the discretion of their employer for no reason whatsoever.

Slacktivist has a piece on an interesting comparison: another Duck Dynasty cast member was fired from a speaking engagement because he owns a wine company. Apparently THAT’s just fine with the Christian lobby; no problem with free speech or religion with that one.

He equated gay people with bestiality and terrorism. How is this not hateful bigotry? And, no, I am not in any way obligated to respect someone’s bigoted opinion. I’m really not.

The thing is, gay people have had to deal with this sort of “low level” hatred (AND WORSE) their entire lives, for decades – constantly being told they are going to hell, they are awful people, THEY ARE JUST LIKE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEX WITH ANIMALS. That’s just wrong, and I really, truly do not understand why you are defending this crap.

Bigotry is a cancer. It hurts individuals and it hurts society as a whole. It is not okay.

His views on African Americans regarding the Jim Crow laws are also pretty shitty and, well, no surprise: Racist as hell. And that’s not okay either. At all. There is no defending this shit.
