Nathan, I would like to think that people could change with just simple exposure. BTW, thank you personally. I understand that you are a caring human being. Unfortunately, the people who harbor deep pockets of racism, sexism, ect, are often the people that keep their sentiments quiet. Obama’s election appears to have unearthed, or in some minds, created the vitriolic hatred that flows so easily from people’s mouths and minds. The problem? Hate, divisive speech has been an agenda in this country for several decades now. The last presidential election crouched that divisiveness in code words such as “take back our country” or “social security is an entitlement” or worse “marriage is between a man and a woman”. So much that happens in our society today is a concerted effort by power brokers to manipulate the marginally educated and socially maladjusted. These reality shows, all of them are designed to be mind candy for people who have little access to opportunities and hope. Divide and conquer has always been a tool of war and what we all face today is a war between the owners and the rest of us. Repackaging, in other words, LIES, are the tools used to manipulate. My point is, we all have to finds ways to peel back that boiling cauldron of hatred that is constantly being stoked by the Fox “News” folks, Rush and Co…and the rest of those jokers who are each paid highly to spread hate or obfuscate the truth! Far too many people have died, brutally killed, by people who were viscerally threatened just because someone is different from what they accept as “normal”. And those fears have not and will not be alleviated just by shining a bright light on those odious feelings - for far too many - all of the attention and rising tensions will only empower someone else to physically attack an innocent! Help and/or guide me to understand how to separate someone from their long held beliefs. My experience, and that is all I can share with you, is the work is hard and arduous and requires more time than most want to devote to the effort that change requires. Unless you can ‘catch’ (grok, understand) the pinions that binds and allows people to hate other human beings, then this episode with the Duck Dynasty patriarch will die and the public will blithely move on to the next racially, sexually or religious insult because that’s what we do instead of taking real action.

On some level I judge people who are stupid enough to hold religious beliefs. I know that makes me as bad as them, though it doesn’t really because I don’t go around behaving like if you don’t believe what I do you’ll be tormented for all eternity.
If you didn’t already pick it, I also enjoy being as offensively unpleasant as possible to religious people as well. I’ll leave well enough alone if they don’t bring it up but I’ll be the meanest asshole ever if they want to discuss their idiotic beliefs and expect me to accept it as anything but the fucking nonsense it is.
