I did 8 years hard time in Catholic school (despite being Lutheran) and then another 3 years as a Pentecostal before it finally dawned on me that a whole lot of the people around me were doing way more ‘talking the talk’ than ‘walking that walk’…
Most atheists facepalm when Richard Dawkins utters a word in public and make jokes at his expense. But as a longtime Doctor Who fan I have to give him his due for marrying one of the most adorable actresses to play a “companion” in the late 70’s - early 80’s, Lalla Ward.
Religious believers better pray hard and sure for Dawkins continued health and well being. The minute Dawkins dies, religious folk will be left with talking to atheists who are aware of social media, can express themselves in a sane manner and provide succinct arguments.
Yeah, but that is less the fault of religion, and more the fault of the person and/or the group of people they are with. Most Christians don’t proselytize, but I am sure you know someone who won’t shut the fuck up about their pyramid scheme, or Avon business, or eating vegan, or cross-fit, or home schooling, or homeopathy, or what ever their secret to happiness is.
idk if i could trust a jeezo who diddnt try real hard to convert me. like are you lying about the whole thing or do you rly believe it and just dont care if i burn in hell forever. neither seem great. at least isis try and force you to convert before they knife your head off
Maybe. but I’m not really suggesting they are faking it, just twisting scripture to justify their goals. I’ve heard stories that their theological underpinnings are, at the very least, a bit dodgy. But then again, who am I to judge… I’m really not willing to hack someone’s head off for any reason whatsoever, even something I believe passionately in.
To be fair, I think bigots of any sort who employ religious arguments (or any ideology) to justify their shitty behavior are assholes.
I remember when the campaign for the billboard was posted on here and I was thinking that no one would put up that billboard. It’s just too blunt. IMO they missed an opportunity here by making one more subtle and clever about it and getting the billboard posted!!!
As a result it seems like there’re preaching to the choir.
As someone who has been accused of bigotry and bad behavior here for a religious ideology I hold of but don’t push on others I’m uncertain if I’m one of those assholes you refer too. After all bigot has become a bit devalued as a label.
FWIW I don’t figure you meant that at me personally. We may disagree on some things but that’s neither here nor there.
Well, I’ve read reports from a couple of different groups of non-believers, so I’m sure they weren’t being subtle about their views while standing in line, but apparently yes, people have documented themselves being turned away for not having the proper belief.
It’s not as formal as their employee vetting process, but people have published photos of themselves being turned away. I know I read about at least one and I think also a second group this happened to at PZ Myers’ blog Pharyngula. There was at least one other small group I read about this happening to in a similar science blog, but it’s all fuzzy now.
Keep in mind, these people were not quietly standing in line and blending in with the natives. They were speaking openly amongst themselves (and not whispering) and I remember one group even had buttons they’d made for the occasion.
No, I think we might disagree on the situation in the Mid East and some other political/economic issues, but I’ve seen you defend other’s religious liberty, so I don’t view you as a bigot, just someone I disagree with at times.
I do think that any number of belief systems can be employed to shore up a bigoted world view, not just religious beliefs. And plenty of people employ their faith in quite positive ways in this world. I really just object to people who are bigots, TBH.
