A couple of days ago my son’s friend’s parents had a bit of a startle, and it was captured on their porch security camera. Here’s the sequence of what’s happening below:

  1. Bear wanders onto front porch.
  2. Bear knocks against front door, which occupants hear and believe to be a package delivery.
  3. Bear wanders down side of porch and out of sight just before occupants come outside to retrieve package.
  4. Seeing no package, occupants check the security footage on the phone to see what caused the noise. They are fascinated by the footage of the bear.
  5. With their backs turned. The bear is now coming back down the porch and sees its path blocked.
  6. Bear announces its presence (they said it “hissed” at them) and does a short “bluff charge,” which causes them to run into house.
  7. Bear casually walks away. No harm done.

And before someone on this thread weighs in about people encroaching on bear habitat, that’s absolutely not the case here. This house was built in the 1880s, and this part of the state is one of the very few areas in North America that wasn’t historically part of black bears’ range. They were first introduced to the local mountain range in the 1930s by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Say what you like about many of the humans that own them (and one can say a LOT sometimes), but German Shepherds and Shepherd mixes that have been treated at least nominally well (poor commentary on our species that this low bar has to be qualified) are the very bestest boys and girls ever.

Seriously, that was what I first assumed. The word ‘dog’ might have helped avoid it, whilst the word ‘his’ only served to confirm my subconscious assumption, until I got to the word ‘owner’, even though I parsed that as the house ‘owner’ at first pass.

I mean, yeah, they were brought into CA to replace a more aggressive bear species (CA grizzly) that had been hunted to extinction by the early 1920s. So in that sense, it is true. But all homebuilding has encroached upon wildlife habitat. It’s just a matter of when it happened.

(I changed my reaction from  to :open_mouth: because those were crazy photos. I agree with you but I wanted to add more context.)
