There’s also the question of capture crops, intentional or otherwise. I get impressive infestations of Japanese beetles every year, but they don’t touch the apple tree – quite likely because they’d much rather eat my cherry and raspberry plants.

If ever there was a cultivar that deserved to go extinct, it’s the Red Not-So-Delicious. Unfortunately, only falling demand will curtail its production. To that end, I think there should be little tasting stands set up near apple bins, pitting the RD against the Braeburn and the Honeycrisp. Anyone who still prefers that tasteless, mealy horror after that taste test deserves to eat RDs.

Yeah, but how is it 2016 not everyone has tasted ANY other apple. I will have to ask my mom why she used to buy them as a kid. I am thinking they were the cheapest. Now I by anything but - fuji, pink ladies, honey crisp. Crisp sweet apples with flavor.

I’ve become a fan of Empires. This photo doesn’t do them justice: the ones I get from Michigan have dark red skin, whiter-than-white flesh, and are crisply sweet in a way that isn’t cloying.
