Brexit wins: Britain votes to exit the European Union

In the case of CETA (which was the topic) it appears not as much as they should. It looks likely to pass, which won’t be a good thing for citizens I’m sure. Hopefully people will put enough pressure on their local representatives to reject it. Let’s hope.
@renke
My mistake. I’d raised the topic of state law and you (as you say) exaggerated ideas based on US states. I don’t have a country identifier pinging your IP so I’m hardly to know where you live. Could be Antarctica for all I know.

I’ve got the work-thing to go to now, and this topic closes in 7 hours, so I’ll not get any more replies in. Thanks all for the discussion, I’m glad it was kept civil. BBers know me well enough by now I’m sure.

I’m not saying “fuck you racists” or advocating for that, just saying that the people pushing for Brexit were using racism as their central issue/driving force and we shouldn’t ignore that fact.

At least there hasn’t been a massive spike in racist incidents or anything like that.

It’s okay, though, because all the people that voted to Leave because they disliked the Neoliberal aspects of the EU (fair enough) and the austerity measures of the UK government (on shakier ground here as to how leaving the EU will help this) are going to have an awesome time with (at least 3 1/2) years of a Boris Johnson or Theresa May government and a self-destructing opposition (probably meaning another 5 years on top of that).

And now you can’t move to a better country if it gets really shit.

Still, I’m sure it’ll get better in 2025. If there’s anything left to get better.

Me, I’m still trying to decide when I’ll be prepared to talk to my parents again, or how I’ll explain to my son how his grandparents voted to reduce his opportunities in life.

ETA: If Labour hadn’t been so shite in the AV referendum in 2011, that might have passed, and then we wouldn’t have had this awful Tory government to introduce this absurd self-defeating referendum in the first place, and most likely a more progressive alternative that wouldn’t have led to the same socioeconomic conditions that let Leave win in the first place.

This has been making the rounds… (gol-dangit, stupid embed isn’t working… grrr. It’s the Seinfeld gif of pretending it never happened)
