welcome to boingboing, feel free to check out some of the other articles and don’t forget to “like” comments and posts that you appreciate.
if he is who he says he is, mr. costanza is a dedicated member of the “mens rights” movement, which to me signifies that he’s a delusional jerk but let’s watch the content of his posts and see.
What’s new in the NCFM these days?
Breitbart as impartial truth?
I believe this says it best… not that YOU’RE ridiculous, but he is… You know what I mean.
GG articles really do draw in scummy new accounts, don’t they?
With each GG thread we come closer to attracting the ideal form of “new poster so awesomely bad that it would be a crime against humor to ban him”
As a sociological experiment I’d love to figure out what is their prime drive to visit the site. Discussions of videogames? Old tech? Cool tools?
People appear so surprised when politics is discussed, when that subtly or directly makes up the majority of the articles here.
I know, right? I think there must be some number of folks who literally just trawl the tubes for discussions on these particular issues and sign up to comment accordingly. I’d assume that some are actually people who’ve read for a while, specifically for some particular subset of posts, and are maybe not daily readers, and get pissed off when something political pops up that they disagree with, but I’d suspect more of the latter, honestly. GG has felt rather coherent and staged from early on, contrary to claims to the contrary. I think people underestimate how the modern forms of mass communications we know as social media can provide an effective echo-chamber and organizing mechanisms that can be easily and effectively co-opted for any number of political programs.
Okay… I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was doing in that last sentence… I’m about to write a book review for an academic journal, so I guess that’s where my brain-meats are right about now. Didn’t mean to spew academic jargon all over the place…
Do you have a second site you could, well, cite?
No, he doesn’t need to do that… Breitbart was a man of the people… as long as the people were rich, white, cis-gendered men. Duh.
I’m not even sure he liked them that much either…
He loved anger and cocaine. That appeared to be the limit to what he enjoyed in this world.
“There are these people I’m not going to name, but they’re really awful, trust me, and they totally exist, really, so therefore anyone who supports ethics in games journalism is a racist, sexist homophobic monster”. Uh huh. Keep trying.
Virtually everyone supports ethics in game journalism (if they spare a thought at all about anything gaming related). If that’s what you’re about, you’re better off leaving GamerGate, because it’s everything ELSE that they do under that name that pisses people off.
So, which ethical issues in gaming are concerning you most right now? Because usually when people trot out that line, either they’re offended by: 1) salacious-sounding stuff that was never true and already proven not to be, 2) “social justice warriors have no business giving their opinions, no social issues should be talked about by game journalists except tacitly endorsing the status quo like nature intended” or 3) in a case of the snake swallowing it’s own tail, “GamerGate is getting a bad rap from the media.”
If it’s virtually anything other than those three, tell us the issue, and I’m sure most of us non-GamerGaters would say, “Yeah, you’re right, that’s bad, and shouldn’t be done.”
Except I did name them, via the first and last letter. I even provided a direct link to one of their own “ops”, to which they supported a white supremacist. But hey, keep defending people who are white supremacists (some of which who have now been calling for hits against black people, but are still supported by gamergate) - it really does make GamerGate look good!
They generally get sent in from reddit and twitter, a la “go and participate in this thread so the truth gets out.”
Ahhh, I imagined something more organic considering how few flies appear to swarm, but I imagine the hatemill rebroadcasts are enough.
I do get the impression that there’s some folks who are genuinely concerned about Ethics In Games Journalism[1], and genuinely believe that that is what GamerGate is about, and are frustrated that all these misogynistic jerks are trying to hijack their movement. They’re appallingly naive and oblivious, but…not as bad as the other guys? I guess? I dunno.
Some people are really good at cognitive dissonance. There are folks who identify as members of both the Tea Party and the Occupy movement. Humanity is weird.
[1] As I’ve mentioned before, one of the lesser irritating things about GamerGate is that there actually is a large problem with journalistic ethics in the gaming press, mostly to do with sucking up to the large publishers, and GamerGate makes it harder to seriously discuss that. Of course, the outlets that have spent years pushing for actual Ethics In Games Journalism, like Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun, are the ones that the Gators hate most, because they also push for ethical treatment of women and minorities, etc.
@TobinL do you game, bro?
