I’ve been on the Black Rock Desert when it rained. Believe me, it ain’t Glastonbury mud. It’s more like sticky grease. 4WDs and quad bikes are helpless, and you can’t even walk on it because the stuff sticks to your shoes until they feel like stilts and you can hardly lift the weight. More seriously, the hard crust is less than two feet thick above 1000 feet of semi liquid mud. If it takes enough water to soften, it can swallow vehicles.
