He replied on Sunday with a tweet of his own: “You don’t believe in climate change. You are excused from this conversation.”
Translation:
“I won’t even dignify your ignorant-ass comment by arguing with you; you are dismissed.”
Ignorance and cruelty aside, Trump’s threats to cut off Federal aid for California is also a dumb move politically. California is home to more Republicans than any other single state and those Republicans are largely concentrated in rural areas like the ones currently on fire. Alienating those folks isn’t exactly going to help the long-term prospects of the GOP.
It might even piss off Devon Nunes if we’re lucky. But we probably won’t be.
Not that Newsom isn’t a sharp guy; consider that he was hand-picked by Jerry Brown. But Trump’s inane babblings are as easily knocked back as this other vacant, superficial, airhead:
Be patient. If his cow retweets it, Nunes’ll go ballistic.
Ok, but:
All Trump sees are 65 electoral college votes that he’ll almost certainly never get. His political calculus likely starts and ends there.
Although I read a story today in the LA Times about how conservatives are fleeing the state for redder pastures, there are still plenty of conservatives in California who have wallets. And that’s bound to resonate with him.
