Or it could come down to how you view the term ‘free country’.
If John Wayne can be dethroned, why do Ronald Reagan and J Edgar Hoover still remain on their pedestals?
Actually, his will specifically forbids the use of his image smoking tobacco. Once the cancer set in, he never wanted to be seen as promoting the industry. The film ‘Thank You For Smoking’ got permission from his heirs to use a clip of him with a cigarette only because they were able to show the inherent sarcasm in the scene, and the overall anti-smoking message of the film (and the book it was based on). Good film, great book, one spot of decency from a generally repugnant source.
Thanks for posting that; on the strength of that clip I downloaded the movie, and it was bloody great
Ha, good to hear! Yes, I love that movie. The scene on the bridge while the poem is being read really gets to me. If only more men could forgive their fathers.
He is? Most people I know think he was a creepy man with too much power.
Hoover has never been de-Stalinized. His name is still on the FBI building.
The FBI should formally repudiate him and his tactics.
That’s true, but the FBI doesn’t repudiate anything (I’m thinking about the original Atlanta Olympics bombing suspect). Anyway, my assumption is that this would have to be done legislatively since the naming of buildings is their terrain.
Also, I don’t think the FBI represents average America.
I can think of three movies that I thought he did a good job and are worth seeing- The Searchers, True Grit and The Shootist. Not a lot of range of course but what he did he occasionally did well. Most of his other more cliched stuff I remember seeing on TV as a kid and they just went in one eyeball and out the other. Seeing Rooster Cogburn as a kid started my unrequited love affair with Katherine Hepburn, but seeing the movie as an adult… eh, didn’t hold up so well.
And good for them voting it down, he was an anachronism in his own time and he already has the friggin’ airport. Stupid politicians and their stupid vanity crap. The only good thing to come out of wasting all of our time and money on this crap is that it’s time they can’t spend screwing us.
For double movie trivia points, name the bomb. It was ‘Harry’, later ‘Dirty Harry’.
I’m glad you and @MBrody both beat me to it
Racists Against Racism?
Lee Marvin? Gregory Peck? Henry Fonda?
The heck does that mean?
It means pff, whatever, honky.
Damn, I had to take back my ‘like’ once you edited your comment; as I typically don’t use or advocate pejoratives… unless some foolish soul tries to come at me sideways, first.
But you nailed the basic sentiment being expressed, and I’m not usually inclined to explain the obvious to contrarians.
So thanks.
Well, you know, there’s a case to made that many members of an oppressed minority are likely to be racist - but somewhat more justifiably IMO; some apparent double standards might be reasonable when you take the nuances of a situation into account.
I’m cool with being called a honky, myself. White privilege is comfy enough; ‘reverse’ racism barely makes a dent.
Not that I’m aware that Public Enemy are racist at all (although I wouldn’t blame em).
It gets complicated when one is talking about freedom to follow and support a political system that would erase our freedoms, and put many of us into camps or mass graves. Yes, I have heard the argument that “we are sure to get it right this time”. And I would encourage you to find a place to try and put pure Marxism into practice, but please do it far away from here.
