I don’t think naked means what you think it means.

Could you HEAR that vein on his neck? I could!

I would love to do this myself. I have a drysuit and everything.

If only the great lakes weren’t so famous for their tempestuousness. I have such dreams of mid-summer salmon and selfies on the decommissioned Chicago pumping stations!

I’m fully aware that our laws are designed to allow law enforcement to harass anyone they choose at any time but since I’m no authoritarian reasoning like that doesn’t hold much weight with me. In other modes of travel law enforcement is usually required to have some reason to stop and question you but since this guy was on the water, those kinds of protections from governmental intrusion are magically moot which has nothing to do with my question - what was he doing so that they need to bother him. “Show me your papers” isn’t much of a reason IMO.

Look deeper.

PFD laws are not that different from seat belt or helmet laws. And in this case it looks definitely more about safety than harassment.

Society shouldn’t have to police people who are simply living their lives but society does share the burden when things go wrong, therefore I’m forced into someone else’s life decisions whether I want to be or not. Its a gray area we still don’t have answers for, and unfortunately our current system does allow for abuse and harassment which probably needs its own separate discussion. I mean, would anyone care if Sheriff Andy Taylor pulls over a motorist and kindly reminds them to buckle up and sends them on their way?

I ask myself these questions when thinking about health insurance, healthy living discounts, insurance companies requiring tracking of calories and exercise, etc. Should I expect others to pay for my smoker’s lung disease?

I know I would, especially since that’s not who police are anymore. Not sure about your state but in mine, the police cannot initiate a stop based on a lack of seatbelt.
Every interaction with law enforcement presents a risk to a citizens safety. You can be gunned down while laying face down if you don’t play their deadly game of Simon Says properly. I’d be much more apt to go along to get along if the police weren’t abusing people daily with little to no repercussion other than a paid vacation. This is probably why I react the way I do to them rolling up on a guy having a bit of harmless fun.
BTW, the cop who shot that man for not playing Simon Says the way he wanted, no charges.

I totally get your concern, abuse of authoritarian rule is a common theme here, no one wants that.

But what is your alternative? We can throw away safety laws but that will cause an increase in costly mishaps, and have zero impact on abusive power (there is still weaving in lanes, didn’t use blinker, following too close, etc).
