Never said the holder only held 10 AAs. It held 12 AA-size cells. If you used NiCads, you used 12. If you used alkaline AAs, you only need 10 (due to the higher voltage) and you slipped in the spacer which filled the gap of the 2 missing cells and since it was conductive, passed on the current.

Ah right it was designed for NiCD from the outset.

And NiCads were very spendy back then. I was around 15, and had to save up my allowance for a good while just to buy a set of 12.
