“The right to speak and write whatever one chooses – including, to some degree, worthless, offensive and demonstrable untruths – without cowering in fear of a powerful government is, in our view, an essential component of the protection afforded by the First Amendment,” Judge Smith wrote. If lying about a medal can be classified as a crime, Smith said, so many everyday lies could become criminal acts, such as lying about one’s age, misrepresenting one’s financial status on Facebook, or telling one’s mother falsehoods about drinking, smoking or sex
No, he’s not the “real culprit”. He had no power. He was just an old man talking shit, and should have been politely ignored. The manager wouldn’t have believed him, unless he was predisposed to do so. The manager is the problem, and he’s been dealt with. Not only is he fired, but it’s unlikely he’ll get a job in the restaurant industry any time soon. While Brinker Intl. has a firm policy of not giving references, good or bad, for past employees (other than to confirm employment), this guy’s face is all over the internet, and it never forgets.
Were there legions of people pretending to be veterans coming in, driving the outlet into near bankruptcy? Is that why the assistant manager was so insistent over a $10 or $15 meal? There are times when you just give in to the customer whether or not you actually believe their claim. Ten bucks is not worth the bad publicity social media can inflict on your business.
I inadvertently picked up the wrong box at a pizza place and took it home. When I saw it wasn’t what I ordered, I called the restaurant and told them of my error. I offered to pay for it but they said, "It’s okay. You can keep it and return for your actual order." THAT is good customer service! I always order my pizzas from that place and gladly recommend it to everyone.
There was one study made these days (I think I read it in Motherboard) about the most effective way to decrease online racism. This social scientist made tests with the variables “white avatar with low count of followers” “black avatar with low count of followers” “white avatar with high count of followers” “black avatar with high count of followers”. The accounts used the same non threatening phrase. The research showed that the most effective result on the reduction of bigot terms were from (non surprisingly) the accounts with white avatars and high following.
All this to say: ALLIES MATTER. Bigots dehumanize other people but they listen to their perceived peers.
It’s worth it to a racist. Because they can stick it to their perceived “enemy.” the manager got to feel like a big man for 5 minutes and he got to “defend” his perceived “people.”
Race is a cultural construct which has had devastating consequences for us all, but especially the people who are victimized by it.
“Race is a cultural construct…”. Precisely! I couldn’t agree with you more.
I choose not to think of the assistant managers as a racist since I don’t know him or how well he has treated his customers in the past. But he is definitely a d*ck and an idiot for letting this get so out of hand.
Please. Just because race is a construct, doesn’t mean it doesn’t impact people’s lives. Daily and often. The person in question, whether or not they are a card carrying member of a racist organization or an anti-racist one, seems to have made assumptions based on race.
