CNN: Man's "nice millennial vaping session" ruined when device exploded

Ugh. That post angered me so much. He wasted so much money.

I have a cheapo vape pipe that I use as a prop for theatre stuff (looks like a pipe, exhales nicotine-free smoke-looking vapor, works great) and I figured I’d pop into my brand-new local vape shop for extra cartridges. The two vape bros behind the counter had those vape mods that look like fist-sized black boxes with plastic tubes poking out of them, and were exhaling such huge clouds that I couldn’t see the merchandise. My conversation went like this:
“Sup bro”
“Hi, I’m looking for extra cartridges for my e-pipe.”
“Ja buy it here?”
“No, I…”
“Then no. Later bro.”
“It uses generic e-go carts, you don’t have…”
“I said LATER BRO. Huh huh huh.” PUFF PUFFFFFF

Probably a “mech mod”, meaning a vaporizer without any regulating circuitry. Basically the same circuit as a flashlight. A short circuit can happen for various mechanical failure modes, causing the battery to discharge all its power instantaneously. I wonder why we don’t hear about exploding flashlights now that there are lots flashlights using the exact same lipo batteries as used in vapes.

essential part of the vape “lifestyle”

I don’t partake at work, but I’ve been badly tempted.

In the US it’s best to remain totally sober at work, for legal substances too. Don’t give HR an excuse.

This gives me the vapors.

But of course e-cigarettes are perfectly safe. Eight of ten doctors prefer our brand. Good for digestion. For a smooth smoke. Perfect for treating anxiety. Guaranteed to Satisfy Or Your Money Back.

I don’t think any reasonable person thinks they’re completely safe.

But they are a helluva lot healthier than inhaling tar produced by combusted plant matter.

Are they Doctors of Philosophy?

Now I’m wondering if anyone actually has made a vaping pipe.

Seriously? What is even going on with this vaping stuff? Someone needs to write me a paper or something. I know 2 people who vape (both smokers who are trying to cut down) and both of them are awesome-sauce folks. One was vaping at a restaurant we were at and was actively hiding the clouds by exhaling into his shirt.

When the bf was trying to cut down on smoking, I bought an e-cig kit and had to learn some basics. It’s actually kind of wacky right now, because the vaping thing is so new that technology is moving super fast. In a year, most of the stuff out there will probably seem antiquated. But right now there’s essentially three types:

  • minis, or “cig-a-likes”. These are the ones that look like cigarettes that you can buy at 7-11, pre-filled with juice and disposable, or reusable models that are rechargeable. Refilling is usually with little prefilled cartridges you put inside.
  • vape pens / “eGo”. These are the bigger ones about the size of a pennywhistle, usually with a transparent area in the middle (the cartomizer or ‘clearomizer’ tank that holds the juice). Refilling is done by dripping the nicotine juice into the tank, which is kind of messy.
  • “mods”/APVs. These are the ones the size of a small flashlight or a little box. They’re much more advanced and put out clouds of smoke for the hard core vape dudes.

please excuse this commercial endorsement but, greensmoke dot com. They do it right, and they’re helping me enormously with my own struggle with the accursed lovely nicotine molecule.

I find the massive vaping trend to be, well, awful trendy, too.

odd way for amazon to categorize that

I thought that sellers do their own categorization?

20+ years ago now they used to make hot ones. Coated with cayenne pepper. I loved those. Can’t get them anymore though.

There used to be one looked exactly like a real pipe, but nowhere seems to sell em any more. Shame, there’s nowt like a pipe to wave around to emphasize your point.

Well… I mean you can just keep a pipe specifically for waving…

Or better still, one of those realistic-looking bubble pipes! Teach then delight!
