OK serious question about Arabic Iconography. i don’t read Arabic, but it looks as though the ISIS flag is not in keeping with the traditions of Arabic Calligraphic flags.
So then it is highly probable that while the reporter was a fool and demonstrated extreme stupidity in her initial erroneous non-journalizing, she probably didn’t lie about it on Twitter.
Maybe that’ll save her career?
Her initial dumbness (prompted by someone else’s stupidity) was what drew the clever troll to her though, so it’s somewhat just deserts throughout.
It’s easily confused with the flag of the Taliban, and they’re trying to set themselves apart from other Islamic movements. They’re Islamic paleo-paleo-fundamentalists, and so they need iconography to match. Using what’s basically the Saudi flag minus a sword somewhat defeats the purpose.
If we’re talking aesthetics, you’re right, it’s not great, but they don’t care about that. I will say this about the Nazis: I hate that they used what to me is a very aesthetically pleasing symbol, thus depriving me of its use. ISIS can keep what they’ve got.
I’m sorry, but it looks totally like an ISIS flag. With all the rightful hatred of the confederate flag recently why would anyone think this is a good joke? ISIS is a crazy evil cult that is killing and rampaging through the Middle East. If something should instil actual fear, this should, and does to thousands of people who’s lives are in imminent danger.
I don’t care that it’s made of dildos, it is in irresponsiblly poor taste. I think it’s too close a resemblance to be seen as a parody, much less in the context of in a gay pride rally. I wouldn’t want any association whatsoever with that group, it’s obviously easy to mistake. Honestly, I’d rather see it being burned, then we’d be having the discussion on how burning the flag is lowering ourselves to their level instead of giggling at CNN at being stupid for not seeing the silly dildos.
If it’s not reprehensible, it’s at very least bad bad terrible taste.
All of those examples contain the same words. (There is no god but God. Muhammad is the messenger of God.[) Some are distinctively different.
It should be possible to create a flag containing those words that appeals to both distinctiveness and aesthetic merit. The fact that ISIS has chosen a rather shitty looking flag to accompany a rather shitty state throws their utopian message into further doubt.
Parody does not elude me. Thanks for the insult anyway, your humor is very advanced.
I’m just saying that it was obviously too subtle to be recognized as parody, even in this post someone had to put a closeup of the image to better appreciate the dildos. And they decided to match the actual characters almost perfectly, so it’s like they just didn’t know how to paint.
The confederate flag example is a better example of the use of a dildo motif.
Just being a humor critic, they could have at least had it say ‘gay pride!’ or something more recognizable while being ‘Arabic’ looking, that’s probably its biggest problem. Or have it in a more thematically appropriate color like pink or rainbow… That would all be a matter of taste.
Basically, ask yourself if you would fly that flag outside your house to show your support for gay rights, or your condemnation of Isis?
I srsly doubt very many people around here are going to find it anything other than what it was, or imagine themselves doing what someone else did as a test of tastefulness/whatever.
But just for fun, expand on how it is irresponsible. You left it at “too close a resemblance” and “poor taste” but I can’t see how either is irresponsible.
