College student wants graphic novels banned "I expected Batman and Robin, not pornography"

I live in a certain amount of fear of this type of student. But fortunately, most of my students understand that college is a place where we look at the full range of literature, not just stuff written for emotionally stunted jackasses.

I dunno, some parts of Sandman: The Doll’s House, are, well, not pornographic, but definitely more adult in nature. I think my brain was permanently turned a bit against the Maus Haus after that bit about “Fun Land” and Disney covering up murders. Not to mention this guy:

Don’t forget, the bible thumping type usually use “pornography” not just for sexually explicit material, but for anything that makes them uncomfortable (which is a pretty damn extensive list).

Kids these days would never be able to handle “porn day” in my Contemporary Art History class.

Absolute pornography!

And on a related note, instead of seeing Hulkception, does anyone else see Captain Kangaroo under the hulk-stache?

She can look forward to a great future in drumming up controversies with mindless moral outrage.

She must have been overjoyed when that high school teacher was forced to resign for reading Ginsberg in class.

This totally, tangentially reminds me of a student in a drama class at the University of Utah some time ago, objecting to material in Shakespeare’s plays and was unwilling to perform them as written. She felt entitled to still be in the play but do an “edited” version of Shakespeare.

When my daughter entered middle school, the summer reading assignment for incoming 8th graders was Maus. I don’t know how the teacher managed to get that approved, but I was impressed.

Late edit, but she just reminded me that she was actually assigned Persepolis. In 9th grade. She loved it.

They should also protest the bathroom mirrors. There’s a risk of these showing nudity too. (Maybe not in their case, but they still pose a risk.)

I recall seeing a film (in 7th grade) of actual dead, naked holocaust victims being bulldozed into a pit. I have no idea who allowed that to be shown or why there was no community blowback. However, it certainly remains a strong image in my mind many decades later, and an influence on my thinking about the nature of humankind.

How does a 20 year old make it to college and not understand sex. Parental fail.

I read Maus expecting it to be about cute little mice and shit…

And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.

For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. Giggity!
