This would fall under WDKS. This is a bad bug and pretty near everything we learn paints it as worse than we thought. The way we process and evaluate risk, though, this might be the worst possible scenario. Get the bug, be sick and recover, linger for weeks or months, then decompensate and die. Damn. We just don’t do well with delayed risk.

Temporal association is a bugaboo I fight pretty regularly on other vaccines. “So many teenagers died after getting the HPV shot” is a very common one, and it is true. Millions of teenagers got the shot. A certain number died in the following few months, from car accidents, drowning, suicides and OD’s. The question that needs to be asked is, what was the death rate in an equivalent but unvaccinated group? With HPV, it turns out unvaccinated kids are slightly more likely to die in that same time frame (not enough to reach statistical significance, so essentially equal, which is what you would expect.) Given that we are vaccinating healthcare providers, who unfortunately have a significantly higher risk of suicide that the general population, and the elderly, who have a higher risk of death due to age, the fact that there will be deaths following vaccine is absolutely predictable. The question is, more or less than statistically expected? Haven’t seen that data yet, but suspect it will be HPV redux.
Now this, on the other hand, might actually speak to a manufacturing issue:
