So my protests on Tuesday to my Ontario :canada: political representatives (and my local MPP has yet to be seen by anyone I know to actually respond to a constituent) seem to have been part of a broader wave of objections. “Day Late” Doug Ford, our Premier, now has his own experts holding press conferences, contradicting the safety of his plans.

Once again, no fucks are given about the data on increasingly concerning long term disabilities caused by even mild or asymptomatic infections. It’s all about short term profit. There are days I am pretty convinced we do not deserve to continue on this earth…

„We see waves of seasonal influenza and we don’t lockdown every winter, we accept a level of risk.“

Mike Tildesley

The guy is an expert in zoonotic diseases in livestock, a mathematician. Models are his thing. Part of SAGE. I really wonder what the fuck rides him to say something like that. I really do. He, if not of all, at least of many people, should know better.

my store sells so much ice cream during the winter. not actually sure if it’s more than the summer, but it always surprises me.

im still trying to figure out if my relatives are going to get vaccinated. one of them is a school teacher, still doing in person classes, they’ve never had a problem with vaccines before - but this disease they seem convinced they can tough out. probably because they watched our disgraced former president not die from it.

i dont know if they understand im not going to visit for the funeral.

i wish i could say humans have ever shown we deserve to be here. i still hold hope though that someday we can get there. we just have to keep pushing through it, and this, to get there. doing our little bits to help make it so. someday.

it’s stuff like music, and art, and family, and friends that maybe can help keep everybody keep moving through this time as best we can.

I guess being a right wing nutter takes precedence over scientific training? The lack of concern for long Covid and the seemingly deliberate herd disregard for societal costs of non fatal illnesses is a feature among that crowd. It’s a bit like the fiddled numbers for the Ford Pinto costs (they only counted deaths rather than including horrifically burnt) in that it shows how sociopathic the right wing mindset is…

“50-plus Tory MPs who are sceptical of lockdowns urge Johnson” I think the word skeptical is no longer usable. As Alan Partridge put it “I’m not a homophobe, I’m more a homoskeptic”. It’s now shorthand for sociopathic looney.

I think you’ve stumbled on the key: scientific training versus scientific education.

Tons of cultures throughout human history have met that bar. Just because ours isn’t meeting the bar right now, don’t give up hope on humanity as a whole. We can do better.
(But I also relate to the sentiment. In our current state, we really don’t deserve this place.)

I still feel uneasy about calling Tildesley “a right wing nutter”, as @robertmckenna did. Robert, if you got more to support that claim, I’d go with it. Until then, I would say that part of the scientific education is knowing your limits, and one limit this guy definitely doesn’t know is what to tell the press, and when to STFU until you’ve got data to substantiate your hypothesis.

That’s how we know that the vaccine is quite potent

Describing his experience getting the jab, Ozzy joked: “It was like being stabbed. No, my arm was a bit sore yesterday but I’m glad I got it, you know.”

If he can feel something after getting injected in the arm like that getting to him after many years if not decades of ‘recreational substances’, you know it’s working haha

Off topic for Covid, but on topic for vaccination, and crossposted to BLM thread:

Why hello, Betteridge’s Law. Apparently some scientists are having the discussion yet somehow the only people they could find to name are from the government.

A longer rundown on the shadowy history of inoculation:

Things that stood out to me:

  1. I think Onesimus contribution is more interesting in the larger context of the spread of inoculation theory than just a couple of hundred people in New England.
  2. Jenner was not some white latter-day IP thief stealing ideas from black people, as insinuated, rather he was pioneering vaccination, which is different to, and superior to, inoculation. Interestingly, the Chinese inoculation practice seems to have contained some elements of vaccination, in that there seems to be an attempt to render the virus less active before inoculation.
  3. Wales seems to have picked up the practice of inoculation about a century before “discovery” by the British medical community. One assumes it was probably a folk practice across Europe at the time?

As soon the vaccination started in the small town of Piracanjuba, Mr. Juarez Barbosa, 90 years old, decided he wouldn´t wait and get his vaccine in a drive-thru station.

As he cannot drive, he took a bold decision: He would go there riding his own chariot with his favorite horse.

According to the retiree’s niece, Denise Barbosa de Oliveira, 42 years old, Mr. Juarez is very active and was looking forward to this moment.

“His passion is the horse. The only means of transport he uses is the buggy. In this very important moment, it couldn’t be different. He didn’t think twice when it was his turn to get the vaccine, ” she said.

In case you did not know, our state prime ministers are at the core of our current problems.

Also, the piece doesn’t mention kindergartens / Kitas (Kindertagesstätten).

Yeah, this is fascinating and makes me want to know more about the history of my homeland at least. Historians would add something here about the whitewashing of history - shout out to the much missed Mindysan.
