The School Opening “Debate”

"By large margins, they think schools can be open, in person with masks and distancing and ventilation. "

As long as things that aren’t happening, likely won’t happen, and in many places can’t happen, schools should open. Therefore schools should open. QED. Here’s the Philly school ventilation solution.

Same here. By the way, we just had -26°C in Marburg. Ventilation, yes? Lüften, as we say in German. Fixes everything. Headaches. Bad mood. Corona.

Ah, Philly…the same school system that shut down for “heat days” in the summer, because they couldn’t manage air conditioning. Their ventilation solution is just what I expected. :weary:

And probably consciousness at that temperature.

I can’t remember if I ever posted here, but last year I saw an article about how the reason most old, non-updated building in NYC and other cities are so overheated in winter is because the radiators were sized to allow for the windows to be open during the winter. Because they were installed round about 1918…

That isn’t the article I was thinking of, but same story. I work in energy efficiency and unfortunately, that over sizing was codified and we still struggle with it today.

I scream, I scream: I want vaccine and free Ice cream.

Well, they won’t need freezers for that.

It’s about 5degreesF here right now, so the ice cream isn’t such a draw. Seems a funny choice for the climate there, too.
Also, I feel like if they tried that here (USA) there would be a new conspiracy theory about the ice cream making you gay or something.

Fine, more for me.

Seriously, though, I remain convinced that an ice cream cone would be enough to squash about 60% of vaccine “hesitancy”.

Do you think so? I’ve been wrestling with the idea of, earlier on we were talking about just paying people to get the vaccine. But there is such a horrible history of medical experimentation and abuse, I think that approach might lead to more craziness. And then if anything were to go wrong…it seems very fraught.

There are Qwhackers and JFK Jr’s, but when I hear about people who are clearly getting this crap in their Face###k they are giving really weak-sauce excuses (people who had Trump signs up, for instance). I don’t think this is deeply held belief for the majority of them, just a hazy hodgepodge of misinformation. No more truly consequential (possibly less) than whether the opposing team’s player was safe at home.

Pernicious oversimplification! The key is sequenzielles Stoßlüften.

In at least nine federal states there have apparently been violations of the vaccination sequence and people who have not yet had their turn were vaccinated against Corona. This was the result of a research by the news agency dpa. Local politicians, clergymen as well as firefighters and police officers came into play, although they do not belong to the first priority group.

In Lower Saxony, for example, had the district administrator of Peine and his deputy vaccinated, and in Saxony-Anhalt the district administrator of the Wittenberg district and his deputy as well as the mayor of Halle and two city councilors. In North Rhine-Westphalia, among others, the mayor of Hennef, his predecessor and the mayor of Wachtberg received a vaccination. In Bavaria, the district administrator of Donau-Ries and the mayor of Donauwörth were vaccinated. Police officers were also vaccinated in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, fire fighters in Rhineland-Palatinate and police officers and fire fighters in Hamburg. In Bremen and Hesse, senior hospital staff are also said to have been vaccinated.

The German Foundation for Patient Protection warned of the injustices in the sequence of the corona vaccinations and called for the punishment of “preluders”.

The sequence of vaccinations is clearly regulated in the ordinance of the Federal Ministry of Health: First of all, people over the age of 80 should be vaccinated, as well as those people who have a particularly high risk of infection through their work in hospitals, doctor’s practices, care facilities or vaccination centers. They belong to the group with the highest priority. The regulation only gives police officers a high priority; district administrators are not listed separately.

This still isn’t big news, and it does not mention that in some cases at least, local authorities argue that jabs would have gone to waste, and it is much better to use them than to let them spoil.

However, it is unfortunate that after vaccination nationalism, we are seeing vaccination egotism already on community level.

Brazilian writer Zélia Gattai tells in a memoir about her exile in Eastern Europe during the 1950s that she was amazed at seeing children eating ice cream in a department store in the middle of winter in Moscow.
