Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

Creepy! Now I want a cloth mask that makes me look like one of the twins!

JK. I want one that makes me look like a cat, or a smiling person. But I already feel like my “mask wardrobe” is as big as it needs to be.

I don’t intend to quit wearing them.

Flu season comes every year. Allergies hit pretty regularly, too.

So what if it’s not mandatory. And if it makes people stand back, good.

I know a number of people planning (or at least saying they’re planning) to continue to use masks after they’re no longer “needed”*. One of them is openly wanting them for the fashion statements.

*The CDC’s flu tracking has barely cracked 100 at it’s worst this season, it’s waaaaaay down from that now: Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report | CDC . Masks are surely part of that.

Saw a mechanic yesterday, and he was wearing a mask similar to this:

You’re right - it’s a great idea for encouraging people to keep their distance!

My mother-in-law got out the mask sewing kit again a few weeks ago and reloaded everyone’s stash with her new and improved four-layer model. From outside to inside: quilting cotton, two layers of non-woven interfacing laid in opposite directions, and flannel. Bias tape sleeve for a nose wire.

For unavoidable forays into places I know are pits of pestilence, I go into my stash of what I hope are legit KN95s, and I am considering getting KF94s because they look like they might fit better. Alabama’s Grandma Gov just announced today that the statewide mask mandate will be lifted April 9, never mind that vaccination progress here is one of the slowest in the country. I expect to be wearing some kind of mask for a long while yet.

AFAICT, it’s a mix of people getting tired of restrictions, people not feeling the seriousness of the situation (exactly because we’ve done so well, so that there have few hospitalizations and deaths), and the new and much more easily spreading British virus variant.

Oh I’m sorry but wasn’t that what chinese propagandists said we should have done to deal with the crisis last year??? If they had their shit together and didn’t try to bury what was going on in their backyard but instead dealt with it upfront with their people, they wouldn’t have to worry about such a scenario.

My partner got one with the muzzle of a Great Pyrenees. It’s not a great mask on its own, even though it has a filter insert, but it looks great worn in front of my half face respirator. Wearing that combination is the only way for me to get more smiles than quizzical looks in a 3M 6100.

What is on the horizon? 3,000 daily deaths by covid.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health predicts that the country will have up to 3,000 daily deaths by covid-19 this month. The new variants of the virus, the collapse of the hospital structure and the lack of vaccines are the causes of such a frightening forecast.

I read many moving stories in today’s newspapers. We can only cry for the dead and for us, who are still here.

Considering the long road ahead for us trying to get out of the Trumpist hole we are in, we have no room to judge you guys. I hope you can find a way out of your long nightmare.

So do I. Thanks. Obrigado.

What are you actually talking about here? You don’t care, any more than I do or the US government does, whether inflation goes up in China.

And China had a local government failure for about two weeks last year. Other than that they have handled it much, much better than the EU, US, and UK. We’re not in a position to throw stones. The US in particular has had local government failures which were more egregious. For example:

And that’s before you get to places like Florida deliberately keeping and giving false data and firing and prosecuting people trying to keep the data correct.

Gah! All that mess to get appointments, and they have huge lineups outside the clinics.

Today must be more of the same because there are two news helicopters orbiting it right now, catching some B-roll. (Police helicopters have stealthy low-noise blades. These are loud!)

eta: My clock told me that the page changed, but not for the better.

Appointments Fully Booked

All appointments at this clinic are currently booked. Additional appointments slots will be released as more vaccines become available. Residents are encourage to check back often.
