good

I wish this were happening to a far higher proportion of these maskholes who refuse to abide by the policies of the businesses they insist on being in.

Yo-yo Ma is a true inspiration. I happened to stumble upon the documentary about his Silk Road project one day while working from a hotel room, and it made my day.

Not only do I distrust their true motives (because FB could use the same tactics they discover for their own benefit), but where’s the use of the capabilities they already have to combat the spread. Everything they flag as misinformation could be countered, but they’re not doing it now while they study this.

They already function as a news platform. That statistic about high hesitancy in Republican men is just one example. Are they bombarding those users with news stories about Republican leaders getting vaccinated? Probably not.

Now now, even crash test dummies are able to convey accurate information about the events unfolding around them. RIP Buster.

Ugh, not good.

So far, it seems like more of a problem for confidence in vaccines than for the actual efficacy of this particular vaccine.

Edit:

So far, these vaccines have shown themselves to be extraordinarily safe. In fact, it’s perhaps surprising that we haven’t heard more stories of adverse effects. There could well be some extremely rare event that is triggered by Covid-19 vaccines, but there is no sign of this yet. We can just hope that this message gets through to those who are still hesitant because of the misinformation that has been spread about the supposed harm of vaccines, and the unhelpful comments made by some European politicians.

“Not until you get both shots.”

This is a particular problem in light of the fact that we are vaccinating the elderly as an understandable priority. However, this demographic is already prone to a multitude of health problems. Blaming these events on the vaccine without epidemiologic evaluation is bonkers. Would these folks have developed blood clots in the absence of the vaccine? Only a thorough evaluation of the data can answer that, and I have yet to see that.

Oh, FFS.

Germany suspended AZ vaccine as well.

Sidenote:
The major German news, Tagesschau, has two quite abysmally translated quotes on tagesschau.de:

Mitentwickler Andrew Pollard, Leiter der Oxford Vaccine Group, erklĂ€rte, es gebe “sehr beruhigende Beweise”, dass das Vakzin in Großbritannien - bislang sein Haupteinsatzgebiet in Europa - nicht zu einer Zunahme von Blutgerinnseln gefĂŒhrt habe.

And

Astrazeneca veröffentlichte zuletzt eine Mitteilung, in der erneut die Sicherheit des Vakzins “basierend auf klaren wissenschaftlichen Beweisen” betont wurde.

I can’t even be bothered looking up the original, but they surely didn’t speak of “proof” and “scientific proof”?

ETA: this whole AZ episode is like a train wreck in public communication. What the hell is going on?

The Anglosphere And Yurp

Every country managed to fuck things up in its own way, to some extent. In very broad terms, while not with exactly the same timing, most of Europe including the UK managed to squash covid for the Summer into the Fall and then

Now the UK is doing “fine” (with respect to new daily cases), the US trend is still in the right driection, and both are way ahead of everyone else with the vaccinations. Elsewhere, the rollout is bad, and politicians in continental Europe are acting as if the median voter is a vax denier. No deep thoughts.

Last week, I lucked into a last-minute “doses would go to waste” slot at my church’s vaccination event and got my first shot of the Pfizer. Needless to say, I headed out the door before the phone call was over. There’s still a follow-up jab, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if there will be more shots sooner in the future than I think, but I feel warily hopeful for the first time in a year that feels like a decade. That doesn’t mean I’m ready to ditch the masks or go out to restaurants yet, though.
