Motherfuck
What stupid fucker is skiing?
It isnât the skiing that is spreading the virus, it is the apres ski parties, which involve enormous numbers of people shoehorned into tiny spaces drinking, dancing, and sweating.
Shit. The P.1 variant worries me most, among the ones we know about, anyway, since it seems to be more capable of evading the vaccine-induced (and probably previous infection induced) immunity more so than any others. Need to keep a close eye on that one, especially.
Last time I mentioned that New Cases and Positivity looked like ski jumps.
Now Hospitalizations is starting to look like one.
But Deaths are still down, so nothing to worry about, right? Reopening Fever! Catch it!
Too soon.
Precisely the superspreader events that brought it to Europe last year.
I was talking with a friend in my last night, she and her partner are fully vaccinated. Hearing her talk about going to diners was giving me minor twinges of anxiety, and made me think it will be a long time (if ever) before I really feel âback to normalâ about being out and about.
One minor thing, I think for me buffets are out. And eating sandwiches at conferences when they give you those box lunches. Just thinking about going through the buffet line then eating with my hands grosses me out nowâŚ
FTR, our invaluable outreaching virologists stated that it
most likely evadess infection-induced immunity more often than vaccination-induced immunity, if I havenât completely misunderstood their explanations.
I think the argument was that mild infection with lower immune responses occured more often in Brasil, and the P1 mutant, while quite possibly showing a lower evolutionary fitness, is infectious for those patients again - which, of course, levels the playing field re:fitness, and leads to a new wave which then hits susceptible risk groups and causes abhorrent numbers of hospitalisation and death.
Germany, e.g., has currently more than 70 % B.1.1.7, and about 1 % P1, because the P1 is actually selected against by a low number of low-level immunity.
Superspreading events like the above-mentioned ski resort, however, follow a different pattern, which could explain the high number of P1 cases.
German president makes rare national plea amid COVID pandemic
York Region, Ontario.
Province-wide, weâre at 11.35% 1+ shots. Weâre behind on supply because Canada doesnât have local production, sourcing in Europe and India have had hiccups, and the country to the south has an export ban on vaccines.
And the key quote:
Dr. Michael Warner, medical director of critical care at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, says the current restrictions are not enough to protect people who are getting sick in the third wave of the pandemic. He said the stay-at-home order, imposed in January, was the only thing that worked during the second wave. âThe emergency brake will not work,â he said in an interview on CBC News Network on Saturday.
And to think that Melbourne imposed an 11 week lock-down, until there was no community transmission⌠not 1000 cases/day which seemed to be this governments âgreen lightâ level.
Anybody else get a sticker?
First dose of Moderna, about five hours ago. (I heard that any side effects might start at around 12 hours?)
I havenât heard of anyone getting significant reaction on the first shot, but almost everyone Iâve spoken to has had a tough time 12-24 hours after the second.
Also, huzzah!
This idiot had to set a lovely example for his kids
