This is not particularly encouraging. If only there were some way to smooth out the processā€¦ to put in at Warp Speed or some such. Oh wellā€¦

Feedback from a teacher in a district following the ā€œhybrid modelā€ (a mix of in-person and virtual classes):

That is really fascinating. I think there will be a huge amount of semi-related basic science info come out of the research into covid-19 that will impact out lives in very unpredictable, but probably positive, ways in the coming years. Not worth the millions dead and injured, though.

That is a number that is just hard to believe, although the math is not difficult. I repeat myself again, it did not have to be like this. It might be too late for way too many around the world, but it did not have to be like this and we cannot ever forget that.

How you report the numbers makes it more understandable to people. This format should be on every newscast.

Agreed. Worldometer reports it as #/million, which is standard epidemiology speak, but does not register with most peopleā€™s brains like this.

And as horrible as that sounds, North Dakota is not even at the top of the list when you look at death rates.

Itā€™s 8th.

You currently have

  • 1 in 759 Mississippians dead
  • 1 in 709 Louisianans dead
  • 1 in 512 New Jerseyites dead

And this is before the thanksgiving surge.

This is the terrifying part. And as that peaks, we will hit Christmas and New Years. Ugly winter for sure.

And weā€™re hearing more and more about people whose sense of smell is weirdly changed and inaccurate, i.e., parosmia, which is mentioned in the SA article. And Iā€™ve read that sometimes the smells are strong and make people feel sick.

Iā€™ve begun to think that I may have had a mild case of Covid19 at the end of September. I thought at the time that I had a cold or mild flu. I had dismissed the thought of Covid19 at the time because I didnā€™t feel feverish, and yes I was sick but it ā€œwasnā€™t that badā€. But looking back my symptoms certainly could have been Covid19, especially as we hear more and more that symptoms can really vary widely and people can even be asymptomatic.

Then a couple of weeks ago I had the weird experience of a floor-mopping solution smelling so strong to me that I could hardly believe itā€”it smelled bizarrely strongā€”and it made my lungs seem to close up so that for several days I couldnā€™t get a full breath. That really scared me. Then just this week I suddenly started smelling an intensely strong scent of roses, just incredibly strong, and it quickly gave me a headache. When I inquired, I found that nothing rose-scented was being used! But varnish had been applied to a new wooden kitchen countertop, which must have been what I was smelling. Weird!

I didnā€™t think I could have gotten Covid19 because Iā€™ve been careful and have avoided close contact with other people. But about five days before I came down with that illness in September, I was mugged, and the kid who mugged me was very much in my face the whole time (he pushed me down and then tried to take my purse by breaking the strap, but I had it cross-body, and the strap never did break). The struggle went on for a while; meanwhile I was screaming as loud as I could and taking big deep breaths so I could scream. He did have a disposable mask on, but I wasnā€™t wearing a mask because I was out walking by myself and there was no one else around on the street that afternoon. So itā€™s possible that I got it from that kid, if indeed I did have it. I guess Iā€™ll never know. It would be interesting to have an antibody test, though, to find out if I did actually have it.

Sorry that got a bit longā€”was just trying to describe my own strange smell experiences which I wonder if they could be a result of Covid19.
