Yay!

(Michael Osterholm has been one of my heroes since I became aware of him while he was our Minnesota state epidemiologist in the 1980s and ‘90s. I’ve never met him or anything—just have always admired his intelligence and dedication.)

Anvisa, the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, temporarily suspends testing of the Coronavac vaccine, which will be produced by Butantan Institute.

Discontinuation of vaccine testing was determined after a ‘serious adverse event’, according to the agency.

In an interview with TV Cultura, the director of Butantan Institute said that Anvisa was notified about the death of a volunteer, but that it had nothing to do with the trials.

For a virus known to have neurological effects, it would be good to know if this subject had preexisting issues with depression or suicidality or substance abuse. Very sad story regardless.

The way some governments (including my own, of course) have politicized a public health crisis, the public health crisis of our generation, no less, is so insulting to our common humanity sometimes I can only rage…
