So much for my hopes of seeing the virus under control this year. I guess now we have to hope that the virus watches the news and is impressed by transparent political theater.

Fuck.

But other experts and federal officials have pushed back, saying there’s no evidence that a single dose will protect against the pandemic coronavirus. Moreover, some fear that a single dose could create weak immune responses that would give the virus more chances to mutate to avoid immune responses all together.

Yeah, let’s risk all that in order to try and look good.

In a brief modeling study

Yeah, those have all worked out brilliantly to date.

That would make sense if and only if there are assurances that in the 3-4 week interregnum, the availability of vaccines will double (at least.) I have not seen that yet. Maybe they know something I don’t, but what I see is a bunch of people who will think they are immune and are not. That is a recipe for disaster. (Again)

I have a hard time reading any of this and not seeing it as a politically driven gamble. As I understand it, Biden is banking on supply chain fixes suddenly appearing, but certainly it sounds like other countries (particularly the UK) are already just pretending that the magic needle will fix everything regardless of how it’s used.

I mean, I’m already concerned that people won’t give the vaccinations time to take effect and will immediately leap into unnecessarily risky behavior. Where’s that XKCD?

Saturday, eh, so time for a weekly report from the Great Not-So-White Anymore North :canada:.
We’re hitting American-level case loads here in Ontario and Quebec. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have locked down their borders, something which Ontario certainly could have done easily, and school closures have been extended.

One does dispair a bit at our leadership bragging about how long they were able to keep schools open. That’s “Day Late, Dollar Short” Doug Ford, “leader” of the Ontario :canada: provincial government, today’s cartoon in The Toronto Star, who was boasting yesterday that everyone had said lockdowns would hit schools in October. Well, um, maybe you should have done that, eh Doug?

The CBC also has a well thought out vaccine explainer for the skeptics in your neighbourhood.

That last article is fantastic, with amazingly clear and informative graphics. Thank you for posting it!

I would suggest posting that as it’s own thread. It’s that good.

Whoever prepared that article did a good job of presenting a very complicated subject in an accessible manner. It does, of necessity, simplify some parts, but hits all the vital areas. Should be required reading among those making decisions!
