Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

Tempting as it is to post “play stupid games” memes, this is a tragedy by any measure at all. The stupid power trip that led people like this to the place they are is tragic, the outcomes for them and their families is tragic, the impact on the rest of us is tragic. There is no upside. I weep for our people.

Not sure what to do with this information since there doesn’t seem to be a safe way to intentionally infect oneself, but I suppose that for those individuals who were lucky enough to fully recover from a covid infection, this is good news:

(Prior to this study there have been others indicating that recovered covid patients who then got a vaccine are even more protected against reinfection than recovered patients who didn’t, and this doesn’t contradict that)

All my usual “one study” caveats. This study does directly contradict this one:

which tells me that there is more to the story. I worry the Israeli study will be twisted by the antivaxx people to promote “natural infection” and anti-mask assholes to support their position. I am currently still filing it under WDKS and see what shakes out.

No, it actually doesn’t. It contradicts the HEADLINE but not the study itself. The study itself compared reinfection rates of previously infected people who got the vaccine with reinfection rates of people who didn’t.

Since it was all about reinfection rates it didn’t say anything about non-infected but fully vaccinated individuals at all.

Edit to add:
To be clear, here’s what I’ve taken away from these studies, which, again, I don’t think contradict each other.

  1. Unvaccinated person with no prior infection:
Highest risk of getting an infection
  2. Vaccinated person with no prior infection: much less risk of getting an infection
  3. Unvaccinated person who was lucky enough to fully recover from a prior infection: even less risk of getting an infection (due to a broader immune response, per that study)
  4. Vaccinated person who had fully recovered from a prior infection before getting vaccinated: very lowest risk of getting an infection

I posted that ruling in an anti mask “discussion” on my favorite group. I was immediately told the judge is a communist.

Uh ohs, the old Bible says routine…

“The Bible says we’re made in the image of God and Satan tries to cover that up. A mask is a sign of oppression,”

Shibuya Redevelopment Association estimated 260,000 pedestrians per day on week days, and 390,000 pedestrians on non-working days

how in the world does japan not have enough vaccine?

Oh my gosh, I asked if all judges were communist or just the one who made decisions he disagreed with.

I was told it’s well know they were communists and he wouldn’t waste any more time with me.

I’ll bet you can translate that.

my understanding based on various news and discussion has been 2&3 are reversed in your list.

people who recovered from covid don’t always have a great immune response to fend off subsequent infections, and the vaccines provide a better immune response for most people than infection

possibly, there could be some difference with delta? but literally everything ive heard so far is along those lines

( hmmm… there was some thought early on that reinfection might be due to being exposed to different variants - whereas the vaccines gave broader coverage. so … maybe? delta has been so successful at pushing out other variants that infection by other variants is rare right now. in that scenario, vaccination would still be best over time. )

Ok, but did you actually read that in a scientific study? The one I linked to above was a large one, with lots of data.

Got an email today from my PCP’s office. The clinic is scheduling boosters in anticipation of FDA approval at 6 months post 2nd dose. I went ahead and scheduled for the appropriate time frame. Crazy that it’s almost been 6 months already.

I feel a bit conflicted- so many parts of the world don’t have enough for first and second doses and here I am getting a third. But I also have a young kid who can’t get vaccinated and health issues that might make me vulnerable to COVID19. Also, refusing a booster won’t magically send it to a country in need.
I fucking hate this time line.

The Bible also says sick people should wear masks in public. Seriously.

Got a chapter and verse for that?

Well people tend to trot out Leviticus 13 45:46, but in the context he is clearly talking about the rules of Leprosy and not about any other disease.

https://biblehub.com/niv/leviticus/13.htm

Of course since the fundies like to take the Bible out of context when it suits them then this could work.
