Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

Good news, which I missed earlier: pre-activated antiviral innate immunity in the upper airways controls early SARS-CoV-2 infection in children, based on pattern recognition receptors in the MDA5 interferon system.

WDKS - but we are learning. And while it is difficult to stick to that belief, I still hope that a deeper understanding of the shit we don’t know will help us to make better decisions, better policies, better politics.

It really does come home when it’s your own. We just had our first patient admitted to ICU with covid. It was bound to happen, I guess, but damn, it sucks.

CBS has a similar story. 2-time Afghanistan veteran died from gallbladder stone complications because no beds are available due to COVIDiots. TL:DR: Taliban can’t kill him, but our medical system, overloaded by COVIDiots, did.

In other news…

Hawaii, anticipating another wave of COVID delta due to nobody listening to prohibition of gatherings (Honolulu police broke up SEVERAL large illegal gatherings), had its governor signed into law releasing hospitals and staff from liability should they have to implement “crisis standards” of triage like Idaho. ICU is already near capacity from the July 4th superspreader event.

Several Oregon counties requested refrigerated trucks due to morgue being full of COVID victims. While these are small counties with small morgues, it’s nonetheless a very sobering thought on how had we bungled the success we enjoyed earlier, having suffered through 2020, into this disaster…

You know it’s bad when Grady is getting overwhelmed…

I believe a fair number of these patients are being sent from the ex-urbs and outside the metro area.

Just heard from our VP that one of our employees who lived MS (near Memphis) died of Covid on Sunday. I have no idea if he was vaccinated, but I believe he was over 70 and had some significant health issues.

Very sad.

(We are a very small operation; less than 50 employees from MS, OH to HI.)

Not sure if we covered this incident or not, but…

MLM Las Vegas Convention in August suspected to be a super-spreader event with 20000 attendees.

FWIW, the “jewelry convention” was held by Paparazzi Jewelry, a MLM company. Social media is reporting multiple deaths from that event. This has not been confirmed by credible sources.

Not surprised. Earlier reports from Houston, TX which has 80+ hospitals within an hour or two, has already ran out of ICU beds several WEEKS ago, that a typical wait for ICU bed is 3-4 weeks. Rural ER really has no place to send their COVID patients as they have no ICU and no COVID ward.

Hospitals all over are converting EVERY space they had (class rooms, conference rooms…) into COVID wards, but they may not have enough staff to run them.

Before the pandemic, we had a problem with rural hospitals closing, too.

But yeah, our health care system is fucked.

A research team led by the University of Tokyo Institute of Medical Science has put out a report claiming that the efficacy of existing vaccines against the mu variant is only 1/7 compared to how well the vaccines work against previous variants, based on a study of the neutralizing antibodies that vaccination produces.
