Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

So school board members are now concerned that their meetings might become the target of terrorist attacks…

School board meetings, usually one of the most mundane examples of local democracy in action, have exploded with vitriol across the country in recent months, and school leaders are scared.

That’s according to a letter that the National School Boards Association sent this week to President Biden. It’s asking for help from federal law enforcement, including the Justice, Education and Homeland Security departments as well as the FBI, saying: “These heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”

“ Tweed is not the only airport American is ceasing service to as Thursday. It also will end service to the Williamsport, Penn. airport, among others. Williamsport [has been scrambling to attract a new airline.

American’s decision to stop serving Tweed has more to do with American’s own pandemic-related issues than Tweed’s performance as a destination, he said.

“Our load factors were good,” Scanlon said, pointing out that American’s flights to and from Tweed have been 73 percent full this month and were 77 percent full last month.

“But what’s happening is that there is a global pilot and equipment shortage,” he said. “I know that they will definitely” be looking at Tweed again, particularly after it extends its runway from the current 5,600 feet to 6,635 feet, he said.

No symptoms? Then he’s just malingering. He should go back to the office at once and get working on writing the majority opinion for cases with his colleagues.

It’ll be interesting to see where the Koch libertarian think-tank “kill grandma” network goes with this one, after all the quack treatments that they’ve jumped on, including ignoring Covid, since this began.

That’s a pretty stark map, but thankfully most countries in Africa are currently seeing a far lower infection and death rate than the US or Europe.

With low vaccination rates that could change very quickly. And of course that’s only reported deaths, so who knows how accurate that is.

When I saw that news I had two thoughts:
Will anti-vaxers agree to take it?
You know what has an even greater effect - getting vaccinated. (Also is that effect similar if the patient has been vaccinated or not)

And in people getting frustrated with anti-vaxers:

The Africans seem to be doing just fine with their COVID numbers, though - way better than Europe, or God forbid, the US. I think that after going through all sorts of other horrendous pandemics of much worse diseases (Ebola, malaria, and so on), they know how to take the right precautions. Someone refusing to wear a mask or socially distance because “freedom” probably wouldn’t last too long.

And this is really a good illustration for what everyone should have relied upon to end the pandemic - not expensive medications, not even vaccines, but just good old-fashioned contact tracing and social distancing/masks.

Reminds me of the oft-misattributed proverb of “man who goes to bed with itchy butt wakes up with a smelly finger.”

Also, ewwwwwwwwww.

Is that a Covid-19 side effect or Ivermectin side effect?

There do seem to be quite a few more roaming assholes since the pandemic started.

Oregon just released a report on breakthrough cases and deaths, and the trend is not great. In the month of August about a quarter of all covid deaths were breakthrough cases:

Granted, part of that trend may be a statistical illusion as more and more of the public gets vaccinated.

I tried explaining that to a die hard antivaxer friend-of-a-friend. If you’re in a town with 100 vaccinated people, and the death rate for vaccinated people is 1%, and one covid infected person comes to town, infects everyone and then dies, you would expect 50% of all deaths in the town to be vaccinated persons.

Rates made up for ease of explanation in this example.

Yes, that phenomenon is why I referred to the “statistical illusion” possibility, but there’s definitely more to it than that. In this case the total number of deaths was rising significantly too.

Today I learned that Pfizer will be selling ivermectin as their own cure.
