Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

UK, Ireland, US… Fuck me, this is fast.

I’m curious about the R0 of this variant, current Rt's and the other usual estimates, like series length etc. in different settings we observe.

We are, once again, to slow for this shit hitting the fan.

In the United States, the seven-day rolling average for new COVID-19 infections was 125,775 on Friday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nation’s seven-day average test positivity rate currently stands at 7.2%, higher than the 5% threshold the WHO recommends staying below.

New York State has been particularly hard hit, logging 21,027 positive COVID-19 cases Thursday, the highest number of single-day new infections the state has reported since the pandemic began, according to state data.

On Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency over the spike in cases in Washington, DC.

Sadly, to late for Omicron.

Meanwhile:

The STIKO has changed its recommendation for booster jabs to three months.

[Suggestion: try GTranslate, or Deepl]

This might be based on findings reported elsewhere, some pandemic decades ago…

Money quote:

COVID-19 vaccines […] that use mRNA technology provide the biggest boost to antibody levels when given 10-12 weeks after the second dose

Refers to this study:

UK resident mutants: I think they still take participants. Go for it, mutants.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but WDKS. And every time we think we do know shit, it changes the question and we are caught flat footed again. Masking, distancing and avoiding crowds works regardless of the variant, but that is inconvenient. And of course the vaccines makes you a mutant. Gaaaagh!!!

Ontario :canada: is probably close enough to :de:. We take public transit less, we too have a more or less civilized health care system, but our political leadership was selected for its folksy charm, not its intellectual strength. I get the feeling we’re a wee bit ahead on the Omicron wave.

The estimate for Omicron is R(t)=3.38 :fearful: with an overall score of R(t)=1.89 due to 88% of cases being Omicron; our current doubling rate is 2.9 days.

Edit: my house is on the flight path for the emergency medivac helicopters between our biggest hospital and Toronto. Flights have picked up of late… We’re also near the main line for CP rail. Freight train frequency is a good leading economic indicator and it’s way down.

I can’t decide if “they’re injecting hydras into your body” is more crazy or less crazy than the microchip thing.

I wonder if this one started as one of those telephone-game type rumors.

“They’re trying to control society through these government vaccine mandates!”
“Yeah, it’s just like HYDRA from the Marvel comics!”
“HYDRA is behind the vaccines? That explains everything!”
“The government is trying to inject you full of Hydras!”

The government is injecting you with hydrants!

Neighbor’s teen started running a low fever Friday, tested positive. Double vaccinated, booster was scheduled for this week. Feeling better by yesterday, so that’s good.
Neighbor had similar mild symptoms yesterday, says he’s feeling ok today. Double vaccinated and boosted.
They’re quarantining for the 10 days now - Merry Omicron Xmas?

Fuckin’ A. We are hearing the same claptrap from our incoming governor. “Never again will we shut down this economy”

We are fucking doomed. I just had a mom yelling at me because “other countries have cures for this virus, you just won’t give them to us!” Yeah, because we are just loving this shit.

that was one my family trotted out pre vaccines.

when i pointed out that the death to infection ratio in the place they mentioned ( south korea ) was almost exactly the same as ours, there were just fewer infections because people were masking - i got told that i was calling my family stupid

sigh

maybe it’d be malpractice, but it’d be nice to be able to say: oh no! you’re right, you caught me. now roll up your sleeve and ill give you the first of the two doses you’ll need…

Word.

If I would not get into trouble for it, I might have that tattooed on my knuckles. Last thing some bonehead might see before they go to sleep.

Have heard similar figures from the Netherlands, the UK and Eire. Germany: not yet, and over the next two plus two weeks, you can basically just kick all figures in the bin right away, before even looking at them.
Local contact tracing is gone, officially you are now under legal obligation to do it yourself (but nobody really noticed!). Since two makes it traditional, we have a tradition of testing less, reporting results belatedly (hence: correct test result figures for next week will be known in the third week of January, if everything works as planned), and the public not being interested in getting tested, anyway.

I fully expect that January will see what Germans stupidly call “lockdown”.

Fuck this, by the way - there wasn’t a single day of “lockdown” in Germany, and I could go bonkers hearing the term used for the half-arsed measures around the country over and over and over again.

Oh, by the way, of course - why we postpone further measures to the 28th? Why we deliberately ended the epidemic emergency of national importance?
Just don’t ask. Prsnlly, I get nauseous from all that political spin.
