I took it to mean “Control group is on the ISS, but if you’re stuck on the B Ark with the rest of us, the only choice left to you is which intervention group you’re in.”

That’s pretty much it. Works well as an analogy to explain what the choices really are. Not so effective as an IRB proposal.

There are no surprise here, but some nice graphical representation of how fucked we are and how we became so fucked. So, that’s nice.

This is being reported like it is the Biden Administration’s fault. It isn’t, it is the Supreme Court signaling that it won’t uphold the moratorium.

Good. This will be fun to hear the screeching of “persecuted conservatives just exercising their freedoms.”

This isn’t specifically about Covid, but I’ve stumbled across a beautiful BBC documentary about the inner working of cells, how viruses invade them, and how cells fight back:

It’s good background information to better understand the science behind vaccines… and it’s narrated by David Tennant too.

More evidence that everyone should be masking to protect others, whether you’re vaccinated or not:

I will compare this to patients undergoing cancer therapy. The first time around, they are fit and strong and able to weather the trauma of the toxic modalities well, but in a relapse when they are already broken down from the previous round, they tend to do much more poorly. Our healthcare system is broken down and exhausted. A second winter like last and we will break. You can see it coming in some places already. If this is a war, the frontline troops have been at the point far too long without R&R. You guys need to take really good care of yourselves, because I cannot promise that we will be able to take care of you.

I am reminded, for some reason, of an old episode of “This Old House”. Bob Vila and his crew finished ripping off the roof of a two-story house they were renovating, and had covered the rafters with tarps in preparation for putting down new sheathing. Before that could be done, a major storm system moved through the area, with predicatable effects.

As he was being shown all the water damage to the upper floor, Vila was looking at all the walls and commiserating with the homeowners, when he spied the latest delivery of materials. In the most excited voice I’d ever heard from him, he exclaimed “Oh, look - the new windows have been delivered!”

This doesn’t sound good:

I think I know what rat they’re referring to but what about the giant turtles?

Seconded, with strong emphasis on supporting nurses.

And yet, here we go…

On Tuesday this week, more than 1,450 patients with COVID-19 were admitted to hospitals across the state, marking the highest number of patients seeking care within a 24-hour period in Florida since the onset of the pandemic.

Shit.

Mr. Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, declares that the city will have four days of celebration in September to commemorate the ‘end of the pandemic’. The city’s city hall will allow indoor environments such as nightclubs to function at half capacity in October and will abolish the mandatory use of masks in November.
