Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

Uruguay will offer a third shot to everyone who was vaccinated with the Coronavac. The Health authorities of the South American nation will offer a dose of Pfizer to boost the immune system of the population as the chinese vaccine isnÂŽt considered very effcient against the Delta Variant.

Not even the control group. They are just the “natural infection” arm of the study. There is no control group in this experiment, because (IMHO) there will be very few who can both avoid the vaccine and the illness. I just think that group will be too small to matter statistically. We are all in the experiment, we just get to choose which arm.

Not sure if evil or just brain damaged. Probably both.

I had no idea there were still countries refusing to vaccinate their citizens. Wow, the idiocy is global.

Not sure I follow that logic. Why would getting infected mean you’re not part of the control group?

The control group would need to be neither vaccinated nor infected. The experimental arms would be those that are “manipulated,” either by vaccinating or by infection. I do not think in the end there will be enough with no exposure to virus or vaccine to make a meaningful conclusion.

When conducting the clinical trials the number of symptomatic infections/serious complications between those in the control group and those who received the vaccine were compared with each other.

I think I might understand what you’re saying if you’re talking about creating a new experiment sometime in the future, but as an ongoing experiment I think unvaccinated folks could still be considered as the control group, depending on when you consider the starting point to be.

Edit to add: the NIH is still recruiting volunteer college-age folks for their preventcovidu.org study, including some unvaccinated folks for a control group, so they apparently still consider control groups to be useful.

Control groups are useful. You do understand, I am not proposing an actual study, I am arguing with parents who do not want their children to be vaccinated. But yes, if your goal is to study the adverse consequences of vaccines vs adverse consequences of no vaccine, having a control group that gets neither vaccine nor illness prevented by said vaccine would be highly desirable to establish a baseline. Both groups develop myocarditis, cognitive disfunction, develop superpowers, whatever. Without knowing the background rate in a non-exposed population, the data are harder to suss out. And in the face of a global pandemic, which tends to change the background rates of a lot of things, historical norms may not be reliable. Nonetheless, this is an argument without point, as the ability to conduct such an experiment is long gone.

I think, from @anon29537550’s perspective as a clinician rather than someone designing an experiment, the phrase “control group” has implications that don’t really exist on the individual level. If there’s a control group, then that typically means that there is a question of whether the treatment is worse or better than the disease. At this point, with COVID, there is little uncertainty in that regard. The vaccines work and lead to dramatically better outcome than the disease in unvaccinated people.

Or to put it another way, among people 12 and older, designing and initiating a study that leaves subjects unvaccinated would be unethical due to the massive difference in outcome between groups that have already been observed.

Just like with vaccination, unless it affects GOP/GQP voters the governors and local officials in those states won’t do anything to help. So far, all we’ve seen from that crowd is another excuse to fine people who cannot afford to pay and/or use them to feed the prison pipeline.

Because they assume the victims of this are all inner city people of color, not their own. They’re wrong, of course. Without an address, many of their own voters will be unable to vote, thanks to the new voting restrictions. And that’s in addition to the many who won’t be able to vote because they’re dead or on a ventilator.

Critical thinking skills are not their forté.

Carlson: “Take it from the guy who created Covid. Watch This.” [Video of Dr. Fauci]

After waiting the requisite 8 weeks, I got my second vaccination dose today!

I’ve got a day off work tomorrow, so now I can just relax and enjoy the long weekend.
